Took me 1:03 to the junction with Glendora Ridge Road (9 mile mark). 2:10 to Baldy Village. 3:05 back to the GMR/GRR junction. Stayed in big ring all the way up until the 4.5 mile marker on GRR. I parked right at the intersection of Sierra Madre and GMR. Mile markers on GRR start at the GMR/GRR junction at 0 and hit 12.0 at Baldy village. Mileage markers on GMR actually start at 0 where GMR hits East Fork which is 5 miles past GMR/GRR. The mile markers then go to 14.0 at the bottom or GMR. Only used 2 bottles of fluid for the whole ride. | | |

We rode together for a few hours 'til he split off and went in search of the Salton Sea. Terrible time of year for that. 1rst time for me to ride to SD and thru Pendleton. Is a fairly easy route. I stopped in Oceanside for pizza and Carlsbad for coffee. The campground at San Elijo is OK and had good facilities and a store and a 'to go' restaurant. However the Hiker Biker site was 20 yards from the coast highway and 75 from the train which blew its horn every time it passed. That sucker is very loud. Hard to sleep. | 5237 | |

I rode for a while with a couple of Rock and Road guys that I know. Sags were great though the only fluid besides water was something called "SPIZ". I'm sorry , but I wont drink anything that sounds like and rhymes with various bodily fluids, none of which I want to ingest! Felt strong the whole way and finished in decent time. I stopped at all the sags which I did not need to. Used the big ring all the way except for 3-4 miles near mile 85 where there was a 8-12 % grade on and off. Was going to stop at El Capitan campground 20 miles north of Santa Barbara, but decided to push on to my aunts house in Santa Barbara where a couch, company and dinner awaited. Long day and began to feel some saddle soreness. Minor medial knee pain as well. Riding on the 101 is not fun. Shoulders at the bridges is narrow and the trucks and cars are just a few feet from you though the big trucks do create a wind that pushes one along. | | |

Used the campground on the right side of Pier road- Oceano State Beach campground- sites costing $35 per night, not the usual $5 in the hiker biker sites. Very nice guys, put my egg beaters on for me and since it way extremely overcast and misting they even put brand new small lights on the front and back of the nice well maintained Trek road bike. I thought it was only going to be 2000 foot climb, but the guy in the shop told me it was over 3000 so I wasnt surprised on the ride. There was no one else riding up the highway, but a lot of folks using the tour guides to shuttle them up and then ride down with a guide. 7:32:00 | | Riding into Denali I had great clear views of massive Mt McKinley. The possibility of running into moose ( I didn't) or grizzly bear ( I didn't) made for some excitement. I only saw 2 other people not entering the park in vehicles, Bill and Dylan. Bill was tring to run the 92 miles from the park entrance to the end of the road, Kantishna in under 24 hours. Dylan was on a bike as his support. I saw them at mile 20 on my way in and mile 34 on my way out. Perfect weather and unusual in that it was very clear and few clouds. I did see caribou, one of which charged me , but veered off at about 20 yards, thereby raising my heart rate to new limits. Got to see a couple of Roadrunners, a long tailed thing on the singletrack along Skyline and a turkey vulture of close on Silverado.
