Aahhh... so nice to get back out on the bike and the trails. Super pleasant solo ride out to SP. Been sick for way too long! Lost 10lbs by starving the fever, and not drinking beer. Makes the climbs so much easier. In a rare twist I started feeling better and better as I climbed so I kept on going on out to SP, one of my favorite rides. Stupid stupid Garmin mysteriously stopped tracking my ascents/descents sometime around Beeks, did not notice until the descent back from SP. Had to power off/on to get the ascent tracking back, even though mileage and time, etc. was still tracking. Stupid Garmin. Truly, a Great Ride!  Other Comments

Had to start work super early so left a bit early to go ride. Delighted to see the Peacocks are back, one may be juvenile. Another spectacular sunset into twilight into darkness ride out to Sierra Peak. Simply sensational. Unfortunately I was a bit rushed and had no time to hang around. Although breezy, temps on the ridge were easily 20 degrees warmer than the cold temps in HR, brrrr... Delicious sashimi dinner and watching the meteor shower out on the back patio. Hard to beat a So Cal Winter. Great Ride!

Fantabulous! Superb twilight ride out to SP. KWH opted to join at the last minute, nice to have some company along. Initially the sunset looked to be a marine layer subdued dud, but as the sun fell further over the horizon suddenly downtown LA and other clusters of buildings glowed brightly from the reflected sunset. It only lasted about 2 min and then was gone, replaced by ever brighter twinkling lights all across the LA basin. I received an alert that the ISS was going to be visible at 5:32 so we hurried over to a good vantage point as it was going to be low on the horizon. Got there just in time, to watch the ISS seemingly going against the incoming jet traffic. I love riding up here, above the hustle and hassle below. Perfect weather, cold for real in HR and the lower canyon, beautiful up on Sierra Ridge. Great Ride!

Oh man! These Fall days are oh so perfect for this ride. I planned it last night, (while enjoying my brewski at Beeks), and my plan played out perfectly. After a tough work week I was real excited to get this ride in, so worth it too. Got to SP just minutes before Sunset. The most Southernly building, towers, and dishes got destroyed by the fire, the rest survived OK. I put my bucket back on top of the cable junction box, visible on the SP cam, and placed my rock inside. 1 rock for each visit, it all starts over again. Caught the sensational orange/red sunset action from the helo pad. Fabulous darkening twilight all the way back to Beeks. Sadly, no critters, no tracks. Dropped in to the dark, dark HR abyss feeling pretty darned good. Folks were gathering at the gate for the haunted hike. Chuckle, they should hear some of MY stories - practically a lifetime of adventures on Blackstar! Great Ride!

Well, our regularly scheduled ride was interrupted so it became everybody solo. I checked the Sierra Peak weather station data and could see nature's AC was blowing strong. Done deal, off I went. Not surprisingly, ran into mtnbikeJ on his BS double, and Old&InTheWay as he was prepping for his adventure (who knows where that guy is headed!). Ty and his buddy blew by me on the ascent like they were on eBikes, impressive. Out on Sierra Peak, all mine. Breezes were blowing strong and air felt clean despite all the smoke visible in both basins. Met up with J at Beeks and bombed the descent together, both of us relieved to be done. Awesome adventure! Great Ride!

Really nice out there tonight. Had a long list of "honey-do's" to help my new friend out and got a late afternoon start. Except for a few hikers in the lower canyon, nobody out and about. On my ascent I came upon a large group of Turkey Vultures circling overhead. One in particular had an interesting flight pattern as he would nearly skim the rim of the trail and traverse it just inches above the ground, then land on a tree branch and wait for me to catch up. This bird was clearly tagged, forever known as "7X". His demeanor was different from the other half dozen or so overhead. Natures entertainment. As expected, sweet breezes out on Sierra Ridge. Stoked to be riding strong. Great Ride!

Tight schedule today, this ride was mid-afternoon, just as the breezes started but not yet in full swing, so it was a bit hot in the windless areas. Saw just 2 other riders toward the end of the ride. Awesome puffy clouds over the San Gabes. Great Ride!

Superb super-solo summer sunset sweet sensation statistically seriously satisfies! I knew it would be just like it was, cool, beautiful, and super-solo. Like, I did not see anyone beyond a handful of hikers up and down. The basin was not too clear, but the Santa Ana's sure were. Smashingly gorgeous. Bountiful breezes blew-by bodaciously. Great Ride!

Today I was handed the gift of time by the OCCourts Jury Duty. Although my service started in Santa Ana, I and about 60 others were assigned to a case held in Westminster. After being ordered to report for a second day, we sat around until 11:30 when it was announced our services would not be needed after all. Woohoo! Taking full advantage of this wonderful gift I made some quick repairs to the Fiend and headed off for Sierra Peak. Simply gorgeous out there. Chatted with a few friends I crossed paths with on my descent. On my solo ascent I also crossed paths with a big ol' fat Coyote in HR. He was so not bothered by my presence at all and barely yielded the road to me. Coyote with attitude. Later, on the descent I spooked him up at the first cattle guard. I spooked him good because he took off running down the trail at top speed and when he realized he was not going to out run me he went straight up the rock cliff there. Wow! Great Ride!

Hordes of hikers all hoping to see Blackstar Falls I suspect, because at the turn, no one else. Super solo all the way out to Sierra Peak (a bit surprised to see 4 other riders on Sierra Ridge upon my return). And, oh!, what a fabulous afternoon for it! Forever sensational views, fantastic So Cal Winter weather. Ever check the temps at Sierra Peak? Kind of unexpected to ride to SP in short sleeves and shorts in the dead of Winter. Usually in January it's as many layers as you've got, if your even out there at all. And that's why it matters. Oh yeah,,, it was a Great Ride!

Perfectly planned, expertly executed. A favorite of mine, a specialty really, Sunset and full Moon rise visible simultaneously. Sierra Ridge is the perfect place and exceeded expectations on this twilight adventure. Followed some interesting paw prints, definitely fresh, but no critters tonight. Sad to say the fire in Cajon Pass looks absolutely massive from this vantage point. I could see huge plumes of black smoke, looked to be a war zone. Spectacular twilight return along Sierra Ridge, expecting a critter at any moment. Not. Blasted my handlebar light for tbe BS descent. Sensational! Great Ride!

OMG! If I die in my sleep tonight, someone blame mtnbikeJ! I struggled tonight. J's right, too much solo riding makes for a slow rider. The cool breezes were nothing but teazes, my feet hurt, and I was really hungry, and the sun was in my eyes and pretty sure my shoelaces were untied too. Oh, and then, you know, I broke a spoke! Horrors! But, riding back on Sierra Ridge we saw 2 Deer - so that makes up for everything. All even! Great Ride!

J suggested it, I was already thinking about it, and so it was. I warned him about my slow pace, but he was OK with it. Was not until out on the trail I realized J's intentions. He was picking up Pokemon characters! He stayed just far enough ahead that I could not really see, but I know he was. Real nice out on the ridge tonight, smallest handful of other riders. Great Ride!

4th Annual pilgrimage to Sierra Peak for 'billions and billions" of fireworks shows. From this vantage point you can see all across the LA basin and the Inland Empire. This year somewhat subdued by the marine layer and just subdued in general. Quite the struggle with the 30 pound party pack of food and brew, I was real relieved to make it. Traction is not a problem with that much weight on your back. On the descent, took a few minutes to get used to riding with lights again and I took every bad line there was too be had until I got the hang of it again. Always a blast. Thanks for joining J! Great Ride!

Wow! Hard to believe its been 6 months since I have been to Sierra Peak. Hoping to make it out here more often for some of natures air conditioning. Got another early start this AM, made a little bit later because I forgot my Garmin and had to go back home for it. Still, I was on the trail by 7am and it was really nice all the way out there. Sierra Ridge was breezy and cooler. On the descent through Blackstar it was hot in some places, eye-balls dried out hot. Feeling pretty relaxed now, Great Ride!  Other Comments

Outstanding mid-day ride! Clear as a bell, forever views over the LA basin were all but gone, but out over the IE it was clear as can be. It was Open Access day at Blackstar but I knew most folks hang in the lower canyon so I was not concerned about crowds and kind of enjoy interacting with the hikers on my ascent anyway. What happened next took me by surprise. I thought I may be experiencing my first hallucination of the year already. There was Art Tuttle, slyly blocking the road with his red truck. Could not believe it! I gave him a "ha-haha" in his ear as I rode past his window. Unbelievable! On Open Access day, Art Tuttle unescorted. Blackstar never ceases to amaze me. Great Ride!

Launched at 3:32 and made it to the gate at 4:47, 2 min after sunset, and 1 min after Dave. Chased that poor guy, but ran out of real estate. I pushed on to Sierra Peak and made it on cat-eyes, no lights. Winds picked up pretty good, but it was 68 degrees out there. Slow-rolled back to a leeward area and hung out and enjoyed the glistening city lights, incredible. Slow-rolled back to Beeks, still amazed at how warm it was. Forgotten the wonderment of being out there totally solo at night. Dropped in to the dark BS abyss, ready for more adventure. Even HR was warm. Groovy! Got down to the lower canyon, swung around the corner, and came upon a Mountain Lion sauntering along. Chased him about 50 yards when he bailed Left at the BS Falls Trail sign, and I bailed Right. Awesome! Winds were howling in the lower canyon, my lights were catching the swirls of dust and falling leaves - surreal. Had this one in my head all week and was stoked to see the weather cooperating. Truly a Great Ride!  Other Comments

Another fantastic twilight adventure. Unfortunately, witnessed someone getting airlifted off of Booby Trap.  Never cooled off in the house last night and I got zero sleep. Kept thinking I should just get up and go ride. So it was that I got an early AM start today. Once I got to the top the temps dropped 10 degrees and the cool breeze was blowing. But much more than that it was clear sky views all the way across the entire LA Basin! Sensational! With all that going on, I had to ride out to Sierra Peak, only this time I took a detour down through one of the private gates to soak in the fantastic views. Took some pics and enjoyed the ride. Real pleased I rode strong too. I guess taking some days off does help. Great Ride!  Other Comments

Late afternoon jaunt out to Sierra Peak. My legs never did join in the fun, but body and soul were all in! Waited and waited for the conditions to get just right and indeed it played out perfectly. Few warm spots climbing, but at the top and out on Sierra Ridge, pure bliss! Natures air conditioning set to "just right". Saw a guy driving his truck a bit hard for the conditions, and shortly after that came across his spare tire that had apparently dropped off its mount, laying there in the middle of the road. He'll find it, can't miss it. Great Ride!

Freakishly fantastic, fabulous, forest forays foster Fiend fun forever, faithfully. Superbly sensational solo sunset sojourn to Sierra Peak so satisfies this evening. Got a little bit of rain at the Peak and on the Ridge return but it felt pretty darned good. And I'll say this... there are few sensations as soothing as the wind whipping the moustache about. Just sayin'. Finally! a ride where I felt strong and rode strong the whole way. Took 2 days off from the bike, but that usually does not help me. This time maybe it did! Really Great Ride!

Took care of a major chore this AM, planned to ride late afternoon from the start and it turned out to be a good move. 4pm start temps were 90 degrees, but started cooling rapidly. Out on Sierra Ridge the temps were in the mid-70's and cooler with a slight breeze. Sweetness on a stick! All that and yet there was not another soul out there.  Wanted to get out earlier today, but missed it by an hour or so. Open Access day at Blackstar / Baker Ranch was not very crowded, a bit of a relief for me. Ran into J at the first switchback and he opted to join me for the climb back to the top. A bit windy at times but not too bad once at the top. I cruised on to Sierra Peak and J turned around. Kind of nice out on Sierra Ridge, once the Freak Riders passed on by I had the place to myself. Started getting a bit warm when I finished. Now, hanging out on the patio, beer in hand, it's quite comfortable. Great Ride!

My Christmas Eve present was the magnificent lingering forever sunset and views of So Cal winter. From my vantage point the waning light lasted nearly an hour. My goal was to make it to Sierra Peak without lights, and I very nearly did. I had to blaze the lights for that last descent and climb. At the peak it was cold and windy, surprise! surprise! (Not really, I had checked the Sierra Peak website and knew exactly what the conditions were like. Cold and windy). But none of that mattered as the incredible twilight display unfolded before me. After changing in to warmer gear, I slow-rolled it back to Beeks. Blackstar was as dark as can be. No critters, although it seemed a perfect night for it. I was surprised to see another rider about half-way up the first ascent (and even more surprised not to see another vehicle parked). Spectacular solo stuff. Great Ride! (I'd do it again)!

Gorgeous night for a Sierra Peak ride! The lights were all a twinkle tonight in big fashion. Of all the lights visible tonight, what percentage of folks were out riding mountain bikes to Sierra Peak? (Hint - I only saw 3 of us. Me and J & S) Literally dozens of riders out tonight and everywhere else too. We could see the big pack of Limestoners as we finished our ride, and when I got home I watched a massive group of riders descend Live Oak, so obviously STT was real busy too. It's no wonder with our incredible weather and the killer full moon. Fabulous! Great Ride indeed!

Simply sensational sunset, lingered, even languished, forever. Very Halloweenish, all orangie with spooky clouds and an occasional moonbeam. Later start than yesterday had us on the lights well before Beeks. Temps were surprisingly comfortable, even out on Sierra Ridge. We wondered why it was so quiet and calm on the way out and quickly discovered it was because of the tailwind, which, of course, became a headwind on the return. Not so calm. What with a killer sunset like that, and good company, what else could it be? but a Great Ride!

Another swell ride with mtnbikeJ. Beautiful twilight/sunset out on Sierra Ridge, on the return the lingering sunset looked very "Halloweenish". Rode the upgraded Fiend, now a 1x10 with the 42 tooth Wolf Tooth Giant Cog. Awesome. Just the 36x11 cassette was a big improvement, but the 42 GC is killer. Even picked up communication from Argentina on the pie plate of a cog. Descent back down BS was as dusty as ever and now my bike is all dusty. Boo Hoo. Oh Well, such is the life of a Mountain Biker.  Liking this as an early AM ride. Lots of cars at the gate parking lot but very few folks out, especially above HR. Out on Sierra Ridge I stopped and talked to some guys 4 wheelin behind the locked gates. Turns out they own those properties, or so they said. They did have the keys. They told me Beeks donated all their family properties to the State. Nice folks and we all agreed it was a very beautiful place to be at that moment. Cool breezes.  Sensational sunset ride out to the Peak. Got there just after dark and settled in for the incredible scene of fireworks. From this vantage point we could see shows as far North as Pasadena and beyond, East as far as Big Bear, South out to Moreno Valley, and West to the coast. All at once we were watching at least 50 different shows. Some were more spectacular than other, but the whole thing was a real spectacle. An uneventful late night return made for another Great Ride!

Always a favorite afternoon/evening ride of mine, but it also always takes a bit of motivation to keep going. Rode with mtnbikeJ, so there was the motivation. Briefly thought I would only go to the Helo Pad, but got the "look" from J, so had to go all the way to SP. Like a horse returning to the barn, the ride back is always a bit quicker and sweeter.  Awoke to a pretty specatacular and lingering sunrise today. Felt surprisingly strong and motivated today so I got up early and started to get it all together. What's this!? I can hardly turn the crank on the Fiend. A near frozen Left side Bottom Bracket delayed departure a bit, then this, and that. Before I knew it, it was late morning! Oh well, at least it will be warm, and it was until I got to Sierra Ridge. Almost turned around and went to Chino Hills when I saw how many cars were parked at the Tree Lot. Contemplated, then relented. And glad I did! One big group of Trail Angels (or alike) and that was it. Sierra Ridge was all mine! Slow-rolled it in both directions and soaked in the sensational forever views! Clear as could be! These are the days that make So Cal worthwhile. And to top it all off, I was surprisingly strong and comfortable on the climbs today after yesterday's climb fest. Stunningly Great Ride!  Other Comments

Gorgeous day for a ride, and I just knew it was going to be nice and clear out on Sierra Ridge. Yesterday was Santiago Peak, today the little sister, Sierra Peak. A perfectly executed slow-roll recovery ride, especially out on Sierra Ridge where I never saw another soul. Got back to Beeks and was feeling pretty good and gave Hagador and Pleasants Peaks a thought, but sanity prevailed and I enjoyed a relaxing descent. Great ride and Happy Trails!  Other Comments

Last ride of 2013 and this just seemed fitting for such a fine day! Slow-rolled it with mtnbikeJ, both of us feeling the effects of a week long of hard riding. It's been a good year of riding for me, despite not meeting my GeoLadders goals (came damned close though!). Looking forward to new adventures and Happy Trails! next year!  Nice early AM start, real comfortable climb. Although quite a few folks were out, it felt like I had the place mostly to myself. Sensational forever views in all directions! Absolutely clear! A few wind gusts but just enough to keep it clear and comfortable. Really bummed to see smoke in Baker Cyn as I descended BS. Hung out and watched the first fire responders until they closed the road. In less than an hour, they had dispatched a helicopter, several small fire trucks, a Dozer, and 2 water trucks. Hung out on SCR and talked with Kevin (on fire watch) as the air support came in. 3 planes, the shot caller and 2 small droppers. Here at home I cannot see the smoke, but it was mostly white when I headed home, so I am hopeful they knocked the thing down quick. Still, a Grrreat Ride!  Other Comments

Bump! Big, big, bump. Ummmm... rear tire a bit low, just as I reached the Helo Pad. Tried pumping and pumping, to no avail. Turns out me Stan's was dry and the valve stem would not seal. So, there I was fixing a flat in the orange and red twilight. Not so bad, and darned sure glad I threw that light in my pack at the last moment. Light came on as I climbed back to Beeks and from that point forth. Really quite comfortable and peaceful out there, but with just the 1 handlebar light I did not mind keeping a stout pace out of HR. The moonlight, while mute, was welcome too. A little intrigue, heaps of beauty, sensational weather, so, of course, it had to be, a Great Ride!

Don't ya just hate it when you show up for a big ride, think you're prepared, only to discover you did not fuel well enough? I know I do. Thought I did everything right, late lunch with protein and reasonable hydration. Yet I started to feel a bonk coming on out on Sierra Ridge and only made it to the Helo pad. Temps were awesome, even a bit chilly with strong winds. By the time I got back to Beeks, I was feeling the bonk again. Dove in for the almonds, string cheese and beer back at the truck. Thanks for your patience J! Great Ride!

Good ol' Blackstar, such a deserved reputation. J and I went out to SP to catch the fireworks. Awesome! Literally hundreds of fireworks shows to watch, from massive to tiny neighborhoods, we could see it all. The finale's were best as we could watch them, and not hear them until it was over - very trippy. The night ride back was eventful too, as we came upon a semi-distressed hiker, who, in an impromptu, and not so thought out fashion, due to a family dispute, decided to hike from Corona airport to RSM, via Skyline/BS. To his credit he made it pretty far. J found him lying in the middle of the road, just above the lower canyon. He was pretty confused, dehydrated and tired. We walked him out to the gate, where to our surprise a bunch of OC Parks Rangers were congregated. But they were not called out for the hiker, just fire watch. Then, as soon as we got to the gate, along comes a car and picks him up. Whoosh! Gone. Just another trippy day on BS. Great fireworks show, Great Ride!  Other Comments

Very few riders out, even though the temps were perfect for an evening ride. Few chores meant a slightly late start, but I had been watching Sierra Peak temps all day and already knew it would be perfect conditions. And indeed they were, but first you've gotta get to Beeks. Ran in to mtnbikeJ on his return from SP about midway on Sierra Ridge. He joined me out to the Helo pad, and kindly fixed my shifting too! Thanks J! We both got absolutely pelted, then groped by the gnats and flying ants on the descent. Saw the original Orange Man out there and chatted a bit back at the truck. Natures air conditioning comes through once again! Great Ride!

Energized by weird weather, so I thought. Not so much. Was already grabbing the 34 shortly after the climb started. But, I was determined and it carried me through for my 100th ride on this route! A superb solo sensational Sierra Peak experience, once again. Paraded in front of the camera at the Peak, hoping to catch a piece of notoriety (maybe someone was watching). Outstanding twilight experience with long shadows. Looking back from Beeks, I could see downtown skyscrapers piercing the brilliant and vibrant orange hued sky. This is why I keep coming back. Down in Hidden Ranch I spooked a couple of Deer, including a "forkie". They first gazed at me like I was an alien, then they caught the flash of the "Fiend" and scampered off. hehe. Had to peel off a not so thin layer of bugs that hitched a ride down the hill and out the lower canyon. I just had a feeling about this ride and it did not disappoint. So what was it? a Great Ride!!!

Wow! such great weather! The sky an amazing blue. As expected, crowded on BS, and a later start meant staying out of descenders way. Out on Sierra Ridge - all mine! Hung out at the helicopter pad and just enjoyed the views, the whispering breezes, and my PB&J. Slow-roll back had me thinking of Hagador or Pleasents Peak, but chores beckon and here I am - home. (Probably won't get to those chores either). Splendid, Great Ride!

Casual solo ride, felt reasonably strong the whole way and beat my average time gate to gate. Kind of crowded out this afternoon, it was all about chase and be chased. Did not realize it was Buffalo chasing me. Chatted a bit at the upper BS gate. I rode the new Fiend, really loving this bike! Over at SP, I hung out at the helo pad for a bit, which apparently attracted the attention of not one, but two helicopters - so I moved. They hung out and gave me the evil eye for a bit then slowly worked their way back over SP. Never landed, just did not like me there I guess. Saw a couple Deer, one at the start in Edwards, the other on the descent in Hidden Ranch. Some pretty choice tunes the whole ride. Great Ride!

I'll admit it, sometimes I daydream about rides and Sierra Peak is always a favorite daydream. Today's ride was no disappointment. Temps were perfect. Saw 3 different snakes in a section I now call, "Snake Alley". A Gopher snake, then a Rattler, and finally a Racer snake - all within 100 yards of each other. (I had to laugh aloud, it reminded me of a trio I used to ride with). Clear skies and views out the IE way, heavy haze over the L.A. basin. Enjoyed the late afternoon shadows too as I saw my shadow several hundred feet below me along the way. Solistically speaking, simply sensational, culminating in a... Great Ride!

Gorgeous late afternoon ride with J&S. Good gate to gate pace, but I started to fade just an 1/8 mile to the top gate. Good pace out to SP too. J&S were on their SS's, and I tried to keep it in gear, but cheated whenever I wanted too. As expected, nature's air conditioning up on Sierra Ridge. 1 flat for J, 1 minor mechanical for me. Great friends on a Great Ride!

Feeling weak all day, but felt surprisingly good and strong on the bike so I kept on going to SP. 1:29 gate to gate, not too bad for an old guy not feeling too well. I had checked the weather station at SP and knew it was cold and breezy so I was ready for that. Kind of surprised to see so many young hikers well above the lower canyon, and all of them were barely clothed - and temps were already in the lower 50's and colder with wind chill. Oh, to be young again. Great Ride!  Other Comments

A rare opportunity for a "mid" ride - mid-day, mid-week. Superbly solo and actually warm and comfortable.  Set it up all so perfectly. Got out a good time. Half-way out Sierra Ridge I was engulfed in the vibrant sunset, just what I was after. After hanging out and enjoying the finale and the forever views, I reluctantly started back - right about the same place I had to spark up the lights. The climb back to Beeks was a joy with the scarlet remnants of the day providing luminescent entertainment. Started on down BS and ran into J&S. Turned around and joined them for the finishing climb. It was really a very nice night out, perfect for riding. Truly, a ride of the greater variety. Greater Ride!

Stellar night ride! We rode all the way to Sierra Peak on moonlight alone - mtnbikeJ, me and Richie Rich. Did not start until after 7pm. Climbing out of Hidden Ranch turned a little tough on me, then I started to get a second wind, you know, just about the time the wind started blowing. A few gusts out on Sierra Ridge, but not too bad. Back at Beeks though, it was blowing pretty good. Beautiful clear night, mostly warm temps, but when it was cold, it was cold. Perfect! Great ride!

Back out on Blackstar in the evening! So fine! Rode with mtnbikej, a considerably faster pace from last night. I was looking to grab another gear on many an occasion, of course there was no other gear to be had. One of my fastest climbs to Sierra Peak. And what a climb it was! Superb sunset and city light views. We needed lights for the last mile, but got to SP in time to gaze out on the final remnants of the day. A orange haze with a near crescent moon looming overhead. Absolutely perfect temps! Thinking about riding here again tomorrow night! It was that good! Great ride!

Sweet solo AM SS cruise. Well maybe not so much a cruise, one of my best times to Sierra Peak. At the BS gate there was a humongous horde of hikers, and 2 large luxury buses. I managed to slip through unnoticed, good thing for you see - they were all wearing red, and I was in blue! After that, very few other folks out and it made for the peaceful quiet solace I was craving. Surprisingly made it to Sierra Peak without dying on the hills, cleaned them all on the SS.  Sweet slow-roll solo sunset sojourn. So nice to get out and breathe the fresh clean air and experience natures A/C, as opposed to the mega-expensive house A/C I have been living in lately. Rode the Jet, so there would be no excuses this time. It was Sierra Peak or bust! No critters, except the tons of Quail. Huge coveys in Hidden Ranch.  Well, the County has wiped the smirk off the lower lip of Blackstar's face. The road has been completely repaired and scraped right up to the washout in Hidden Ranch. The scrape is a good one with not too much loose stuff but enough to be careful on the descent. Saw Donald Jackson and the large ShoAir group on my descent. Nice solo evening ride. I know you won't believe me, no one ever does, but I saw not 1, but 2 bikini clad girls at Beeks (1 black, 1 blaze orange). I did not want to intrude so I kept on riding to Sierra Peak, but now my neck is sore from staring. I tell you, it's true! So, as you may have guessed ... Great Ride!

Warmer temps = Sierra Peak! Several other riders on Blackstar. All started after I did and all passed me at some point. I think my brake was dragging my flat tire. Yeah, that's it. Once on Sierra Peak it was all solo. Made it back to Beeks with plenty of time to spare and hung out and soaked in the sunset. Back at the tailgate party of 1, I saw 3 satellites, including one that flashed ultra-bright as it caught the sun glow. Awesome! Strangely, that is when the pack of Coyotes went off as they trotted up the Baker Ranch road. Each definitely had its own garbling voice - very distinctive, and somewhat eerie too. Great ride!

Timed it all so perfectly. Excellent solo sunset sojourn adventure. Winds were picking up on Sierra Peak and temps dropped dramatically. Slow-rolled it back to Beeks and raced the waning light. Darted through the lower canyon in near darkness. Sure, I had a light in my pack, but where is the fun to that? Oh yeah, one other thing... tubes be gone. Concrete tubes at end of lower canyon have been removed. Hmmmm... I guess we all know what that means. I hear heavy equipment crushing forward. The sanitizing of Blackstar begins? Sigh... No critters, but the twilight descent was exhilirating enough. Great ride!  Other Comments

I knew today's ride was to be exciting and different and I was enlightened from the start. Just the mere thought of it was fantastic and delightful, so comforting, but exotic. It took a lot of work though, and I often considered turning back. Yet each effort was so rewarding and enchanting, I was captivated and helpless. Further and further, I trudged on, now often cold and breezy. It started slowly, but gently began to blossom into a most incredible and inspiring illusion! Initially, I could not fathom what I was about to experience until I realized it was - simply meant to be. So natural and ambrosiac. This was one fantastic sunset! I put the effort in and was rewarded, longer than most, but never forever. Eventually, the cold reality of treachery and darkness prevailed as I faded in to the dark, often looking back at the remnants of the day, not wishing to turn my lights on and face what lay ahead - the dark and lonely abyss of Blackstar. These are days not to be missed. Great ride!

Equal parts, stoked and spooked. Sensational solo sunset climb to Beeks, caught the sun sinking in to the horizon. Rode Sierra Ridge illuminated by a twilight glow. Contemplated the remnants of the day - and a beer. Train horns in the distance calmed the soul. Stoked! The descent felt spooked from the start. Probably because I knew I had to pass those ML tracks in the mud above Hidden Ranch. No iTunes for this descent, just too spooky. And dark! Sure enough, saw a Deer. Great! Right where the tracks are. I had no interest in getting between anything going on there! Did I mention it was really really dark out there? Got out on the blacktop and figure I am home free, groovin' on the "frog concert". Suddenly, a bunch of crashing in the bushes behind me (skin crawled)! Caught a Deer bounding across the road and into the bushes in my lights. Impressive. Back at the truck the warmth and security of my head beanie never felt so good! Shared my beer and almonds with the owls. Great ride  Other Comments

Irresistable it was. Winds were calmer and I got a 15min earlier start. I knew it was true perfection as I caught my shadow 200ft below in the canyon, in the usual spot. Another 5min and it would not exist. Some may have seen tonights sunset, but tonight I will tell you, I was part of the sunset. Just awe inspiring to experience the twilight transition from sunset to darkness, all atop Sierra Ridge. Stopped numerous times and soaked it all in. Added some rocking ELO and it was a party of one! Once again, had the Blackstar descent all to myself. Well, except for those 2 glowing eyes about ground level as I approached the tree covered spot above Hidden Ranch. Probably just that Fox, yeah probably. Slow-rolled the entire descent, one of those rides that just filled the senses. Great ride!  Other Comments

Reached Beeks right at sunset. Perfect timing. Sensational twilight climb out on Sierra Ridge,Solo ride into the setting sun. The entire LA basin lay before me in a resonating orange, then red glow. The Inland Empire's lights already glittering like jewels. Made it to the helo pad before needing lights. Breezy and gusty but not cold. Guess I should have researched the moon rise time - (not until I got back to the truck). On the descent, I came across one of the most threatening animals I ever encountered in Blackstar. A mouse jumped out, all snarling and red eyes glaring, and a 4" tail! He darted in front of me to distract me from the upcoming 20 ft chasm on the left - the narrow section near the top. I think I came within 2" of rolling in to it! Scared me good! County did a great job on those bridges and the lower canyon road is super hardpacked right now - perfect time for laying down some time trials. Great ride!

Sensational! Dramatic skies made great scenery, but the sunset was a bit of a let down. Still, my timing was spot on! Got to Sierra Peak at 6:40, just enough time to change jerseys and beat the sunset back to Beeks. Climbed to Beeks while watching the sunset. (Sure beats watching the news). Race was on to reach the lower gate with no light. Such a blast to bomb the lower canyon in cat-eye mode. Critter count; 8 Tarantulas, 3 Deer, 2 tiny snakes. Spooked young hikers who thought I was a ML. Yep, a ML that hums like tires. Missed seeing the NASA satellite while driving home. Knew I should have stuck around a bit longer.  Planned and dreamed of this ride for days! really, I did. Timing is everything! Saw a tiny, thin little forkie buck deer right from the start. Always a good sign. And it was. Timed it perfectly! Almost. Climbed to the Helo pad instead, owl eyed it. Sensational sunset all the while on Sierra Ridge. Perfect temps, hint of breeze, bright moon over my shoulder. And added bonus! Lightning show over the San Bernardino Mtns! Hung out and soaked it all in (aahh.. train horns too). It's all too much! Soothes the soul. Really, you have got to experience one of these long sunsets from Sierra Peak. The return trip required more concentration than I really wanted to give it. One other rider up at Beeks, also out enjoying the mooonlight. Still could see lightning flashes from the Tree Farm. Here at home it is cold and cloudy. Thinking about going back out to Sierra Peak, it's much nicer there. Thankfully, a Great ride!

Nice AM ride. As I approached the bottom gate I saw some famuliar faces (DIRTULS and ocrogenator) and indavertantly crashed their large group ride (17?). SS'd it the whole way. The lower canyon in SS mode, not so fun. Parts of the climb in SS mode, not so fun. But it does wonders for making a strong rider. Said our "goodbyes" at Beeks and 3 of us headed off to Sierra Peak. I could not keep up with the 2 guys. Hung out at SP and enjoyed the views and cool breezes. (Looks like the fire in Cajon Pass may be out? No smoke visible). Sensational temps and cool breezes.  Cool breezes right from the beginning. A few other riders out, but as usual no one past Beeks. I love how Sierra Ridge casts the sun in your eyes in both directions. Must be mirrors! Slow-rolled it back with long shadows and a solemn sunset. No critters. Bombed the lower canyon in ultra-low light conditions. I'm actually finding the rush a bit addictive! I had my light with me but there is no fun in that. Lots of folks milling around the gate, out enjoying the cool air. Party of one back at the tailgate. Great ride!

Saw 3 riders on their descent, after that it was all super solo, except for Franchi - still climbing into the looming dark. SS'd it all the way - except in the lower canyon (both directions) - there, I love the big ring. I do think SS'n is making me stronger. Riding straight into the sun was, well, enlightening. On the return, there was no mistaking the Fall-like undertones - 8 Tarantulas, long, long shadows, got dark real quick, and, downright chilly. Fall, sans winds, is my favorite time of the year! Felt good today, body and soul. Great ride!

Peaceful mid-morning solo ride. Most folks were already finishing as I was starting. Always the contrarian, I am. Came across a fearless Coyote well above HR. He just kept trotting straight at me and was unfazed when I let out a whoop. He barely stepped aside as we stared each other down while passing. We both looked back at each other and kept on going. Cool breezes and gorgeous views up on the ridge. Great ride!

A ride with a purpose! Sheriff pulls up just as I am reaching the gate and asks me to be on the lookout for a missing Mountain Biker. Apparently she started on the Skyline side. He gave me a description and his card. Off I went with my special purpose. Saw one other rider on his descent in the lower canyon, after that no one until I got back to Beeks after SP. Cool breezes, sensational views, silent solitude, pure nature. Oh, and train horns - love those! This is what the ride is all about. No missing Mountain Biker, hope she is OK. Slow-rolled it back, then bombed the BS descent. As I slow-rolled it back to the truck on the blacktop outside of the gate, in the narrow section. I was nearly hit by a car by mere inches. I could not believe it! I double-backed and let that driver just how I felt about that ! Damned kids driving too fast! Once I got back to the truck the whole incident ruined "the party of one"! Still, the ride itself - a Great Ride!

Empty parking lot and it was not even hot. Nursed my sorry drivetrain to the top. It was quite dramatic, and went something like this - nearly new cassette meet new chain. You're both XTR pedigree, you should get along. But the workhorse is the well used XT cranks -will they play nice with the ivy-league parts? That's when I discovered the middle ring had a bent tooth and broke it bending it back. Installed a nearly new middle ring and off I went for a ride! Well, once I reached Beeks the middle ring chain suck was almost gone, although I could clearly see it in my shadow. That's when I discovered the real troublemaker was the small ring. That was clearly a no-go as I could hardly get a stroke in before chain suck. That's cool - I only needed it for that one hill anyway. Small ring! Your out of here! Beyond the drivetrain drama the cool breezes and incredible views were awesome! Train horns in the distance, soothes the mind. Not another soul until the descent in HR. Great ride!

Aahh.. sweet Blackstar and then the cooling Sierra Peak! Saw only 2 other riders - descenders on BS. Finally, felt smooth and strong, from the very first pedal stroke. The H/T ran awesome, the recent maintenance was noticed and much appreciated. Just think shift, and it does, oh so silently. Strong winds and much cooler temps up on Sierra Ridge. Clear views in to Riverside and IE but not so much to the West. Enjoyed the cooled temps and slow-rolled the return to Beeks and caught the sunset. Easily 25 degrees colder on the descent - I'm thinking downright cold through HR, but back at the lower gate all warm again. I brought a light so I would have no excuses, and I probably should have used it in the lower canyon. But it was such a blast to bomb the lower canyon in owl-eye conditions. Caught just a glimpse of a Bobcat as he leaped off the road near Art's place. Hung out and held the pary of one! Surprised not to see any others on such a fine evening/ Great ride!

Today's forecast called for Sierra Peak! Finally! some sunshine! Saw a few riders at the top gate, after that no one until back on BS. That's the way it usually is, that is why Sierra Ridge is so appealing. Beware of the overgrown mustard along the descent leading in to HR - twice it reached out and tried to wrench my grip on the handlebars. Yeah, you laugh. Wait till it happens to you!  Super climb out to the peak. Started down Coal Cyn for about a mile when the rain started as a drizzle. By the time I turned around and got back to SP, it was heavy drizzle. Lo and behold whom should I meet at the peak, but Uphillrider55. (We were neck and neck on last years ladder but have never met). We headed back but the rain got to Blackstar before we did. Surprisingly, I was able to stay on the bike despite slipping and sliding and about 20 extra lbs of mud. Plenty of other folks caught out in the rain too. Spent a couple hours cleaning all my equipment when I got home. Oh well, all part of the adventure I guess. Great rainy ride!

Superb super sensational solo sunset safari. These are the days not to be missed and I was not going to miss it. Despite climbing hard this morning, and a finicky middle ring that would not allow some of my favorite gears, I made good time to the top. Got a later start than anticipated but did not mind, I was prepared. Reached the helicopter pad with a few minutes to spare before sunset, and decided to skip the last climb to SP and hung out and enjoyed the views instead (sorry, taking 90% rule). Love hearing that train horn! Slow rolled it back to Beeks and soaked in the setting sun and encroaching twilight. Awesome twilight evening on Sierra Ridge, I could not believe I had the place all to myself. Felt undeserving, but then again.. Downright uplifting. Warm temps continued even after sunset, only Hidden Ranch was actually cold. I was inspired by the fleeting remnants of color and light after climbing out of HR. Simply breathtaking.  Mid-morning start was skeptical at best but nature's A/C was still working a bit. The breezes kept the climbing temps tolerable, hot but tolerable. As is the case with morning rides, unfortunately it only got hotter. On the descent on Blackstar the radiant heat was close to oppressive, and the breezes became furnace blasts. At the bottom cold beverages awaited us - a welcome respite in the comfortable shade. Great ride!

Incredible night for a ride to Sierra Peak. Sensational sunset, lingering oranges and reds hung in there for seemingly forever. We watched the sun dip into the horizon from Beeks. Gorgeous! As we rode Sierra Ridge, the lights below were twinkling and dancing in the dark as they do every night. Breezes kept it invigorating and comfortable. 4 Tarantulas up, 5 down. Saw Deer at the top of HR, well their glowing eyes. Beautiful night with great friends makes for a Great Ride!

A most enjoyable afternoon ride with flanneryd (aka Flyin'D). Cool breezes and temps the whole way. Saw a big gray buck Deer as we made our way along Sierra Ridge. While I have often seen tracks, never seen an actual Deer this far up. On the descent, well flanneryD gives me right of way because " this is your home trail". How nice.  Solo ride, just me and my shadow. Funny thing about my shadow, it's very fickle. Sometimes it was right beside me in every way, but before long I was dragging it out to Sierra Peak. As soon as I turned around though, there it was leading the way. It wanted to go fast, I did not - too bad for my shadow. Surprised a Coyote on one of the descents near the peak. Found a wind protected area at the helicopter pad and hung out. On the return got blown about by the wind, colder than expected.  A fine afternoon ride indeed. Sierra Ridge has been scraped, I think. All the deepest ruts are gone but no definitive MTB line, kind of sketchy. The return was full of long shadows. The sun lit up the canyon ridges below like cryptic golden fingers clawing the earth. On the other side, at times I could see my shadow moving in the canyon hundreds of feet below. hehe I guess you had to be there. I always look for it. Temps were perfect, finally some warmth!  I don't mind riding solo, and todays ride was about as solo as it gets. Saw 2 riders descending Blackstar, and another descended the short section between Beeks and Sierra Ridge turnoff with me. Other than that, nobody. It was a good ride, mostly gloomy weather, and I slow rolled the whole thing - 10min longer than yesterday's ascent up Blackstar.  Take flight Racers! Blackstar has been spanked by the Grader! From bottom to top, most of the road is shiny and packed like a sidewalk. The major washouts and ruts have been repaired, but still some remnants to negotiate. Be mindful of the soft spots. Good Luck! Surprisingly I was not the only rider out to Sierra Peak this evening. Windy on Sierra Ridge. Sunset was a downer due to marine layer rolling in, even so I enjoyed the slow roll back. Brought lights but did not need them. Great ride!

By the time I reached Beeks it was cloudy and breezy, brrr... Not to be denied a second time I trudged on to Sierra Peak, lights on about half way to the peak. On the way back the mist and clouds came in making it cold and damp, and downright spooky at times. Came upon a Coyote at the 2nd Cattle gate above Hidden Ranch. Got a good look at him as he did not want to get out of the way, nice coat. Crossed paths with a group of friends a few minutes later. Hung out and picnicked for a bit afterward.

Solo late afternoon/night ride. Big night for wildlife. On the ascent, I followed behind a Bobcat until he stepped into the bushes and let me pass. He just sat there as I passed. Later, on the way down I chased another or the same Bobcat down the road. All the way from the wind sock down to the tubes! He always stayed just ahead of my lights, even in the straight sections where I easily reach faster than 28mph. Always just ahead to where I could not get a positive ID. Very cool!  Beautiful ride - calm and cool, but no rain. Great views in to LA harbor. Looks like Art is back, tire tracks all the way up to the wash out, then all the trail work ruined. Tire tracks lead right back to his place. Great ride!

Maiden ride for my new bike project, nice ride. Not as clear as I expected and kind of chilly on the ridgeline, but still a great ride!

Pre-sunrise ride. Saw a 100+lb Mountain Lion on the way up, just past the gravesite. He ran ahead then jumped in to the bushes, I just kept on going with much trepidation. Views were awesome as always. On the way back down, I came upon a Bobcat putting the sneak on a covey of Quail. When I skidded the rear wheel, they all jumped at once! What an awesome sunrise morning ride - gotta do more of these!

Just shy of making it to the gate. I turned around at the first rain drops as the showers appeared to be circling in on me. Rained all the way back, but never enough to get anything wet. Quite a sensational ride! Views were incredible, huge contrasts from thunder clouds to bright sunshine. Great ride!

2nd time all the way up Blackstar in big ring - 1:13:48 gate to gate. 30 minutes to the Sierra Peak gate and I was spent. Slow-rolled the ride back. Mid-AM ride, not a soul out there.

Hot, muggy climb. Cool, comforting breezes greeted me at the top. It was so nice, I decided to head out to Sierra Peak. Tagged the gate and slow-rolled it back with the sun setting over my shoulder. Descent on Blackstar was quiet. Great ride!

Early-AM ride. Objective was to ride all of Blackstar in big ring - net result was personal best of 1:10:13 gate to gate. Ride to Sierra was nice. Saw a 4-point Buck in velvet just off the public road. Great ride!

Early, early AM ride, nice and cool, clear. Tried to beat the sunrise to Hidden Ranch, missed it by about 5 minutes. Great ride!

Great ride! I never see anyone on this trail. No one goes to Sierra Peak. Temps were perfect for a day in the Santa Ana Mtns.

I sat at Sierra Peak and watched the smoke from the Hesperia fire for a bit. It looked like a volcano blast. Unfortunately, my front disc was rubbing and squeaking the whole way! I stopped and tried to fix it 3 times to no avail. Oh, the horror!
