Oh man! That felt good! So nice to be back in the saddle again, and feeling mostly healthy. Whiting was no less sandy, but STT was sheer bliss. Not a speck of dust, not a speck of mud, the bike is ready for the next big adventure. No more of this weekend joy riding stuff, time to get down to full time riding again. Great Ride!

Yup! Sure do prefer those vacation days when I can start whenever I want. Instead, being the working stiffs that we are, it was a twilight ride. A cold and windy twilight ride at that. Sensational Orange hues and glows, accompanied with an in your face blast of headwind, followed by an extreme side wind. I won't be sorry to see the winds blow on through. On the Luge descent, I just had no flow and could not seem to focus far enough down the trail to get that flow back. Maybe my lights were on too bright, don't know. Nonetheless, a Great Ride!

Nice twilight ride through Whiting with J and Steve. Saw 2 Deer on Serrano, that always makes for a more enjoyable experience. Out on STT it took some getting used to lights and a singletrack, I'm used to a big wide Blackstar road. We did not experience any wind issues and temps were comfortable. I'm hoping the winds are done for the weekend, done for the year would be even better. Great Ride!

Mighty fine stuff out there today! No way I was going to miss out on the thrills. Got out shortly after the storm cell moved through. Not much rain over here or in Whiting, but I could see from the house that Modjeska Grade and part of STT was getting real rain. When I got there, there did appear to be evidence a gully washer had charged through. Beyond that were the sensations of the storm itself as it drifted on over the mountains into my neighborhood. The aftermath lifted my spirits and my awareness. The smells, the sounds, the sights, it was sensory overload that did not disappoint. Ha! And I managed to get tweaked in the one and only muddy spot on the entire ride, a tiny little 2 foot strip caused some spooky front wheel drift but my deft skills saved me once again. Yeah, it was just one of "those" rides. You know? a Great Ride!

Mayhem. Anarchy. Here’s how it went down. Body Central sent the word out Friday that I was doing a longer ride Sunday afternoon when the cool breezes kick in. Everybody was totally down for that, but nobody raised a flag when the digestive tract went on a sugar binge of cookies and cupcakes at last nights party and even proceeded to fuel the next day on leftover cookies and cupcakes. Nothing said. And so it was predictable, really. Should have noticed the sluggish climbing but was focused on the empty trails and promised cool afternoon breezes. But the climbs were feeling a bit tough and soon enough it could not be ignored, the digestive tract was complaining of no substance food, the legs were complaining of no power and pointed their collective leg fingers at the digestive tract. And that was that, all that internal conflict going on and it was decided to abort the original longer ride plan and make the right turn for Beers and Burgers. Still, a Great Ride!  Other Comments

Finally some real live sunshine! Unfortunately, deadlines and commitments, what to leave in, what to leave out - meant I had to leave out OC and make the right turn on down the Luge. Relatively light traffic in Whiting and a complete absence of other human souls on STT. (Better?, trobe)? Still, a Great Ride!

Had bigger ride aspirations, not sure why but it was real easy to make the right down the Luge. Wanted to go bigger, and thought about another Luge loop as I climbed SCR. But those dastardly burgers and beers were shouting in my ear and poking at my tummy. No second loops for me. Great Ride!

Expected OTH light trail traffic today. Not so much in Whiting, but only one other rider out on STT. Still feeling a bit slow and cautious on the Luge, but I'm out there facing the nemesis. Starting to like the lighter feel of no Camelbak draped over my back and shoulders for these shorter rides. Great Ride!

Pretty much a slow-roller, but it was necessary to test out the shifting on the new drivetrain. So pleasantly silent, shifting with sharp precision. The Thriller is running top notch! Sweet! Really very few folks in Whiting and nobody on STT/Luge. Managed to miss; a caterpillar, a small gopher snake, and a large but exceptionally quick red Rattler, which proceeded to coil ultra-quickly and I really don't know if he got a strike at me or not. Both of us were, shall I say? "Rattled". Just another... Great Ride!

Hikers galore in Whiting, out enjoying the day. Who needs some jerk MTB'r rudely barging through, eh? Yeah, that's not me. I try to be a good ambassador of the sport, and have some fun too. Out on STT, nobody, well, one other rider way out in front, I could see his silhouette on Goat Hill. Today, better him than me. I was fine with dropping on down the Luge to my land of beer and burgers. Feeling much more better now, Great Ride!

I kind of like the wet and wild sandy Borrego trail. It's a little bit harder and a lot more interesting (love the sunken bridge, or overtaken by sand, whichever, it's different). Easy to say knowing I plan to replace the drivetrain real soon, hehe. Out on STT, what can i say? - just a peaceful blissful twilight cruise, really nice tonight. The usual routine - dropped the Luge before it got dark, ran the flashers down Live Oak as the remnants of the day dissipated into darkness, rolled in to the garage just moments before real dark. That's just how we do it around here. Great Ride!

Ahhh... good ol' Whiting is back in all its green splendor, wet, sandy drivetrain destroying creek crossings. A real treat I tell ya. Out on STT, pure bliss and a damned fine sunset too. Luge is in fine shape thanks to the dedicated hard work of folks other than me. Ran the flashers all the way home, and rolled in to the garage just as it got dark for real. T'was a Great Ride it was!

Pretty stoked to get out today for a ride. Real tough week workwise and otherwise. Nice cruise through Whiting, then got out on STT and had the place to myself, except for 2 other riders at the flag. Sensational sunset colors while dropping the Luge, which felt especially fast tonight. Great tunes helped to make for a Great Ride!

Sweet solo mid-day ride. Weaved and dodged my way through thousands and thousands of hikers on Borrego. It's fun, most folks are smiling and happy. As I climbed Mustard it was apparent I would not be climbing beyond the Luge today, as planned. My legs were just not that into it today. Out on STT it was pure bliss once again. As I rolled in to the garage, I was feeling pretty darned good. Great Ride!

Sweet mid-AM ride. Slow-rolled it through throngs of hikers on Borrego. Not used to that many park users, but it's all good. Out on STT, a handful of riders some in front, some behind. Much more peaceful, and cool breezes. The Luge kind of sucked really, although I had the flow, the terrain just does not anymore. It's so chopped up it really just a bit annoying. But still, a Great Ride!

Earlier start than usual was nice. Smallest handful of riders in Whiting made me pause and think about another loop, but I was on a mission. Out on STT, it was real nice and I settled in to cruisidaire mode, lovin' the dynaflow. Sunset looked to be a muted dud, so I went ahead and dropped down the Luge rather than hang out. Treated to a wonderful surprise while at Cooks to pick up my liberal reading. Great Ride!

Nice little cruise. Real tough day at work with an early start too. Had bigger ride plans but couldn't muster the energy. Found myself slow-rolling the route wondering, where has my power gone? Got passed by one neighbor on her way to OC, then came upon another neighbor at the bottom of the Luge who needed big help. Kioti and I wrestled with those 2 big downed tree branches for 2 hours! They were a real danger as they had not separated from the tree and could drop at anytime. With just an el cheapo come-along and rope that stretched tremendously it was hard work. Especially after it got dark. We got the first one to come down, but the second was only cracked half way through. Shanghied one group of guys but we could not budge it. Repositioned the come-along and still could not get it to drop. Shanghied the Hoppy Trails group and those guys muscled it down. Got home real late and real tired. Great Ride!

Simply superb, soulistic, super-solo, sunset sensations so sweetly satisfy! Friday night light in Whiting but nary a soul out on STT/Luge. Loving the Fall transition (as best as So Cal can produce). Pumpkin colored hillsides, super long shadows. It's the small things in life that lift my spirits. Great Ride!

2 days off, not feeling right, not liking it, whatever it is. Kind of had to drag my butt out there today and that in itself is a rarity. Sluggish all throughout Whiting, but still managed to muster enough energy to tackle STT/Luge. Surprised to see a big group out there. Started to feel stronger and better while riding, although admittedly the downhills were quite welcome. Dropped down the Luge and stopped to pick up something someone lost (name it and claim it!). Saw a couple of Deer at the bottom of the Luge, totally fixated on something, they never even noticed me. Cooks parking lot was pretty full but I did not see any MTB'rs hanging around to ask if they lost anything. (Kind of cool to see the SCE guys all over the poles as they replace the poles. I know just how dangerous that work is, serious stuff!). Slow-rolled it home and saw a Spike and a Doe tucked off in the bushes. Finally started to feel some actual strength, you know, on the last hill before home. Great Ride!  Other Comments

Wish I could have stayed in Big Bear, but alas reality always rules. Never ceases to amaze me how much Borrego is affected by rain and current conditions are no exception. A bit tougher right now. Felt good and strong all through Whiting, except that my nearly bald rear tire was wagging the bike whichever way it wanted. Out on STT, it was different story. Went in to slow-roll mode. On the Luge, I always rejoice in seeing my shadow 1000 yards across on the other canyon wall. The Luge was just as chunky as ever, ugh. But there at the bottom I ran in to the Family Jennings, Rufus and all. Really love the reroute! Fun, flowy, and smooooottthhhh. Thanks Jim! Dropped Live Oak just before dark, pulled in to the garage just at dark. Great Ride!

Back on home turf. Sensational long drive home including spectacular hard rain, and swollen creeks, all from a passenger view. Yay! Had to replace my lost iPhone from my big Durango trip and lost out on any opportunity to ride Sunday when the big local downpour occurred. Bummer for no ride, but glad I did not get caught out. Ventured out for this ride and was surprised at the epic conditions in Whiting, and later, on the Luge. Not only that, the trails were empty! Literally, only a 20 yard section of unavoidable mud in Whiting (first little bridge got washed out). Some sections of trail were actually improved by the heavy rain. Tough to ride locally after basking in high country sensational beauty, but truly appreciative for my local trails. Great Ride!

Real crowded down at Cooks too. Bike is ready and chomping at the bit for the big trip! (Shhhh... don't tell it, but it may not get to go! ruh roh, there's a change in the air). Twas' a Great Ride!

Sweet cruisin' in Whiting, definitely Friday-night light. Met up with trobe1 at the Stables and headed on out to STT. What's this!? Trail Closed sign at the entrance to STT. Phhhhttttt.... Blew past that. Per the trail signage they are closing the trail at the blowout near the last climb before dropping to the Luge, you know the spot, you've been riding past it for the past several freakin' years! Yeah, only now its too dangerous. Oooohhh.. Yeah rightio! Detecting sarcasm? So who knows what the Cleveland Forest Service is up to? Nonetheless it was a ... Great Ride!

Wow! What a contrast to my last post for this ride, night and day. Nothing placid about this ride, in fact I broke one of my own rules in a big way - never ride THAT angry. I was possessed, and pissed! a bad combination. (But it does make for a very fast time). Once I got out on STT, I started to calm down, mostly because my body could not maintain the pace my mind had insisted on. Still, it was a Great Ride! Come on rain! Be the rain!

Much more better! Nothing stellar, but nothing cellar either. Got a late start and felt compelled to do the short version today, but after retrospect the short difference in time does not offset the hassle and sheer danger of the shorter route. hehehe, in other words, it's better to cross SCR at the Stables than it is to pop out at the water tower gate and turn left on to Modjeska Grade. Nice climb in the sunset on STT, but it was done in seconds, right about the time I reached the flag. Finished up with just enough light and real comfortable temps. Great Ride!

OMG! Lordy, lordy! At times I was so flat I was afraid I was going to fall over! On FU hill it was more of a wheel stand that moved slightly forward. WTH?! Is this some kind of weird biorhythm thing or what? Gotta blow this funk out! You be the judge. This ride averages 1:48 for me, tonight it was 2:03! and at no point did I have the energy, the ability, to sprint in any fashion. No burst speed whatsoever. Its gotta be diet. Damn! But here's the deal - at least I got out there and suffered on through it. One of my truest forte's is tenacity. Tenacity is good in Mountain Biking. There's your silver-lining, folks. Oh yeah! and running the flashers on the way home after dropping the Luge in a fantasmic colorific sunset haze, that's fun too. And that is why, all rides are... Great Rides!

Shabam! 200 baby!! Did not even know it until now. And I just gotta say, it felt damned good too! My goal was to make it down the Luge with enough light not to need a light. And I just barely made that goal. The beautiful thing about the Luge in waning light is every big left turn is brighter. A bit of a later start due to a brake adjustment and annoying squeeking (too much bike hose down). I knew it was going to be close and it was. I kind of had to put some real effort in to it after hopping the barrier on STT, shortly after that actual sunset occurred. Get er' done! So I did! Blazed the flashers in full glory all the way home with a big wide grin on me face. Felt strong. Great Ride!

First ride ever on 2x10. Totally silent, crispest shifting ever, and No chain slap! Wow! Did most of STT in 38-36/30. Not entirely sure about the 26-36 combo, not quite the bail out gear provided by a 3x system. But I did pick up my pace over recent rides, so there is that. Pretty sensational sunset from STT. For a pumpkin lover like me, downright fantastic! An orange hue cast under the clouds, from my vantage point. Pretty cool. Popped out of the Luge exactly at sunset and by the time I dropped down Live Oak the colors were gone. Fade to Gray. Rolled in to the garage right at nightfall. Could not have timed it better.  Dirt - perfectly seasoned with a little moisturizer over night. Mid-afternoon ride, after the last rain but before the sun came out. Nearly empty in Whiting, despite the exceptional conditions (except for Mustard, I actually had to use my triple ring for like the first time in forever. Sigh...). Conditions on STT were incredibly perfect. Not surprised to see ol' Kioti out fixing up the Luge. Mother Nature did a little fixin' of her own out there too. Sensational day to be out and about.  Sigh... I was bonked before I ever left the house, but I am a Mountain Biker and I must ride, so I went out for a slow-roller. By the time I topped Mustard and could see my neighborhood, I was seriously working on astral projection to get me home. Then all of a sudden along comes Dave A and Dynamo. They're heading to OC! Good luck with that, I don't even have a light. But peer pressure being what it is I agreed to ride along to the Luge. The ride got slower with me dragging ass, but nobody seemed to mind as we were treated to an awesome twilight sunset. So we all ended up dropping the Luge just before dark. Not another soul out on STT. Sure would like to break out of this funk and feel like a strong rider again. Regardless, I did get out and enjoy a Great Ride!  Other Comments

"I'm just gonna fool around, Man. Like, just do a thing, you know, whatever" - that was my mantra for this ride. And it was a good one at that! Tommy James and the Shondells rocked this trail! One of my best descents on the Luge in months. Finally, a day when I felt good. In spite of a late start, a most depressing Monday, and a lethargic work day today. How nice to actually jam the Luge - one of my best Lugees this year. Stopped to chat with the Donald Jackson at Cooks, pulled in to the garage just at dark, proper.  Some days you have it, some you don't, sure will be nice when I get it back again. Intended to go out to OC, the temps and breezes were there, the trail was empty as could be, it was all perfect except my body was not having any of it.  Well, here I am back on local trails so I opted to do the full-on local thing and get all my chores done in the AM and go out for an empty trail, totally cool, solo local ride. Except, I was bonked before I ever got started. (It's a long drive from Durango). Still, I had to ride to test the rear brake work I had done earlier (not much help, BTW). I felt incredible on my initial descent and ascending Borrego Trail only to fade on Mustard, and Saddleback Ranch. Ran in to and chatted with Richie Rich out on a moto ride at the top of Modjeska Grade, a much appreciated diversion from my solo mini-sufferfest. Temps were cooler now as I toughed it out to the Luge, only to discover the rear brake work I had done, well, it sucked! I had "some" brake power, but certainly not the results I was after. Be they ever so humble, I am truly thankful for my local trails. Great Ride!  Other Comments

Finally got all my gear cleaned and put away, so I took off for another sensational solo golden twilight ride. Temps were nice and cool in the shade and on the ridges. Speaking of ridges, got some great ridge shadows in, including my favorite. Did not have real good flow on the Luge, but I climbed well. Rode the RIP again, it's quieter than the Jet right now.  Nice cruise after a tough commute yesterday. Just got back from "Fiend's 400 mile Outrageous Oregon Outback Odyssey". An amazing and awesome adventure. Indeed. Super-scenic but unfortunately ended in trauma for my friend. I'm working on my story and will post the ride in segments soon. Nice to be back on home trails, while I was surprised a "BOB-less" full-suspension bike did not feel as light and nimble as hoped, I did have fantastic flow on the Luge and actually, easily, shaved 5 min off my average time. And it is, a Great Ride!  Other Comments

Nice early AM start. Whiting was pure, cool bliss. Surprisingly few hikers, except for 1 big group on Cactus. Out on STT, there appeared to be a steady stream of riders, but I did not catch anyone until the top of the Luge. Had a reasonable flow on the Luge, but not my best by far. Real happy the Jet sqeek-a-thon has been squelched and eliminated. (Thanks Tim)! I felt kind of wonky the whole ride, not sure why, but it was still a... Great Ride!

OMG! Tonights ride was an extreme exercise in tenacity! Each pedal stroke, from the very beginning, each foot of elevation gain, and even the descents, each wheel revolution was a test of tenacity and mind over body, and bike. It was clearly a conspiracy, I say. My body was simply not in to it, and it conspired with the bike. I was given zero power, zero strength. And the bike? It creaked and growned terribly, just to give the body a voice. Still, the mind forced the body, which forced the bike, and eventually, I finished the ride despite the mutiny. It was pathetic at best, and I am real glad no one I know saw me out there. (I would have begged them to shoot me right then and there, I think). So? Can we call it a Great Ride? Have to give it some thought, but that is the point I guess. Despite the conspiratory mutiny, the mind did win and the ride was a Great Ride! ugh... starting a beer IV now.  Other Comments

Thoroughly enjoyable cruise on the RIP! New Chain Rings, New Chain = sharp and silent shifting. Silent running, a pure joy! Got a later start than anticipated and it got a bit cloudy and chilly toward the end there. Sunset was a dud due to the heavy marine layer, and it sure looked dark and gray out over Ortega area. The RIP is ready for all new adventures! Great Ride!

Late start, and I neglected to bring a light so I had to step up the pace a bit. Whiting seemed a little crowded but thinned out once on Mustard. STT was much more better and I took a few minutes to enjoy the sunset and solitude. Hours before I could hear all the sirens, and sure enough once I got out on SCR and headed for home I was turned back due to a bad accident. Been a very long time since I have climbed the "front side" of Ridgeline. I killed it in middle ring! Pretty stoked about that. Helped a couple of riders find their way back to Whiting. Great Ride!

Alas, despite an early rise, and getting my chores done, although I got a lot done today, my ride time kept getting shorter and shorter. I had hoped to ride to Sierra Peak, but suddenly the big winds kicked up and I ended doing more garage cleanup/toss out. So then I figured to ride Whiting/Old Camp, then just Old Camp, and finally settled on a mid to late afternoon Whiting/Luge. Rode the RIP with a brand new rear tire. Temps were fine, breeze was nice. Lots of hikers, but they were all friendly and everybody was happy. Out on STT, one other rider right at the gate, then no one. Surely was not quick and powerful today, but not worried, still feeling strong. It was a... Great Ride!

I, for one, am a believer! I do believe an early start to Daylight Savings Time makes me more productive, and today, I was. Got some after work project stuff done, then set out for a fabulous twilight jaunt. Except that I did not feel quite right, right from the start. Felt a little better when I popped out of Whiting and climbed Modjeska Grade and STT, had it all too myself. Had pretty good flow on the Luge, interesting changes up top there that I did not see in time to negotiate. Oh, and the Lupine is blooming a bit too (a plug for the wildflowers!). As I climbed SCR, groovin' on my tunes, my helmet was attacked by a Bat! Came at me 2x! As I'm flailing at my helmet this guy in a Ridgeline nearly side-swipes me as he speeds by to make his right turn in to Saddleback Estates. Been there, done that, with the Modjeska residents. Dumb ass! Pulled in to the garage just at dark, kind of glad to be alive. Just another adventure! Great Ride!  Other Comments

Almost nobody in Whiting, and STT was all mine! That was fine by me as this was my slow-roller cruiser day. And it was simply sensational out there! The shifting sands of Whiting prove that the trail is never the same. Makes for a much more tiring Borrego climb. Winds started picking up big time out on STT. All in all, it was a Great Ride!

Well, at least my garage is looking better than before. Trying to shrink my footprint a bit and get rid of "stuff", while maximizing storage. So, that's how my morning and noon went. Still had time and desire for a Whiting - Old Camp ride, but by the time I got to the flag, my mind had drifted to beer and burgers on the patio. 2nd day in a row that I got comments for crushing younger riders on Mustard. I can take that kind of ribbing any day. Great Ride, out there on the Happy Trails!

Sensational! Sure is tough to beat hangin' out in the awesome alpine glow of a terrific twilight. Blazin' Orange turns to a muted Pink, then... it's over. Just like that. Twilight riding is the best there is. Yesterday I wussed out; too cold... whine whine whine. As I cleaned the stupid garage, I watched the twilight colors change from the homestead - and was bummed not to be a participant. Today, I realized if I just suit up and get out there, I won't be cold anymore. And so it was. Great Ride on Happy Trails!  Other Comments

Ruttin around on the rut ride. Just kidding, actually I was musing about how I used to consider this a real big ride and would be pretty well spent afterward. Now, it's pretty easy, really. Today, I probably should have opted for a 2nd Whiting loop. Whiting was empty and warm, when compared to STT. A bit breezy on STT made it downright chilly. Luckily, I was well-dressed for it and survived. And ascending in to the clouds is always a trippy experience I enjoy. Hey! It was a Great Ride on Happy Trails!  Other Comments

Gee whiz, just gotta say, that was swell. Mother Nature had it goin' on for this superb solo twilight trek. Sunset broke under the clouds just as I approached FU Hill, lit the hills up in a sensational yellow glow. As I peaked the last turn, the orange was going off. Gave a nod to Catalina and off I went. Surprisingly, as I dropped the bottom of the Luge, the "S" turns were lit up in red. Sensational, indeed. No desire to tuck and speed down Live Oak, the lingering lumens of the day were a joy! Aurora Borealis - So Cal style! How could it be anything but? Great Ride on Happy Trails!!

Pretty strange, really. This ride seemed awfully familiar for some reason. Perfect conditions for a critter cruise and sure enough ran in to a gang of Deer hanging tough in Whiting. They were cool though, a flip of the ears and I knew I was cool to pass thru, quietly. Flashed them a Peace sign. A couple more Deer out on STT, they were a bit more aloof so I felt more comfortable in their territory. Once I peaked, I had terrific flow dropping to the Luge and on down the Luge. Felt real good about it. Gloomy skies, but still... a Great Ride and Happy Trails!

Another sensational sunset sojourn. Whiting was basically empty, nice, but STT was all mine! I debated a second Whiting loop but was more interested in a sensational sunset, and I got it as I climbed FU hill. My dear Deer friends were out there cheering me on, but I was fooling with them. I was wearing my sunset jersey and they could not see me! I even called them out by name; Lillie, Bonita and Rose. They looked so perplexed until I gave Rose a tap on the butt, that really tripped them out! Caught the last remnants of sunset as I made the turn on the last climb and raced to the Luge. I counted 4 different temperature inversions as I dropped the Luge, but the last inversion down Live Oak was the cold one. A most pleasant journey indeed. Happy Trails!!

Another gorgeous sunset ride. Real pretty in Whiting this evening, the sycamores were aflame in orange leafery. Out on STT, no other riders, cold and windy. Helped unite a hiker and one of his 2 dogs. The pup was out on his own adventure and got separated and kept running the wrong way on the trail. I went up and corraled him back. He was real happy to see his master and his buddy dog. That cost me some time though and I just barely made it down the Luge without lights. At the bottom of the Luge, a real strange animal sound. Could not tell if it was a Coyote hacking and wheezing at me, or an Owl, or what. Sounded like a sick or very tired dog barking. Just in case, I actually started bushwhacking around and hiked up toward the sound, but then decided that may not be the best idea and so I retreated. Grrreat Ride!

Pastel sunset, neon moon. These are the days. Sensational! Hung out with my new friends on FU Hill, the Deer clan, and absorbed the incredible sunset. As I dropped down the Luge, my ancient Mayan friends really layed it all out (practicing for the Winter Solstice, I think) with a brilliantly lit trail in orange and reds, then as it darkened at the end, silver.  Extra peaceful in whiting, nary another rider, just the usual hikers. One other rider on STT, and then I looked back as I topped FU hill and could see J gaining on me. He was working on record time and wooshed right on by. That's OK, I was groovin' on the dramatic sunset anyway. Killer orange, fades to bright pink, awesome. Good flow on the Luge and finished once again without needing lights. Hooked up with J&S at Cooks as they were headed out for their night loop (double-looper for J).  Hemmed and hawed all day long. It'll be too cold, too windy - whine whine whine - all the way up to buckling my shoes. But once that cold arctic blast hit my face as I bombed down Concourse, I was committed (or is that should be committed?). Down in Whiting, it was really quite calm and peaceful, a full on balmy 51 degrees (49 while climbing Mustard). Saw plenty of Deer, called out to them but they were busy with all that fine new grass to graze. As soon as I popped over 4 Corners to the Water Tank, that's when it got real cold with the wind chill. Climbing Modjeska Grade, I began to question my route choice. I stuck with it and was glad I did. Not another soul on STT. As I climbed FU Hill, I looked up and saw a family of Deer cheering me on. They started ringing Cow Bells to inspire me, which struck me as odd. (There aren't many cows around anymore). Suddenly I was lifted up the hill. 39 degrees at top of Luge.Once again, squeezed down the Luge without needing lights. Grrreat Ride!

Deja vu. Been there, done that. A mirror image. Sounds familiar. Second verse, same as the first. Still, was not sure of where I was going. Yeah, not really. Another sensational solo venture on the home trail. You know, every ride is different though. Sometimes you feel great (tonight I felt great), sometimes you don't. Sometimes the trail is the same (tonight it was great), sometimes not. Sometimes there are critters, sometimes not. This time not, but there should have been. A small handful of riders in Whiting, and not another soul on STT. What's up with that? STT was killer in the twilight. Again, the Mayan landing strip was layed out for me. Around each turn it got lighter, although the sun had already set. How do they do that!? Stopped at Cooks to pick up my liberal reading. Funny, except for my spandex and a bike that weighs 1% as theirs, I fit in. Wonder why that is? LOL! Pulled in to the garage just at dark. Perfecto! Grrreat Ride!

Sweet super-solo sunset singletrack sojourn. These are the days! Took off as early as I could after work and cut out Cattle Pond/Cactus/Saddleback Ranch just to ensure I would make it down the Luge without lights. And I did. But first I got all tangled up in an intense twilight experience as I melted in to the brightly lit mountains. Actual sunset occurred as I was on the last climb. The race was on! So, the cool thing I realized about the Luge in low light is this - as you get lower and lower it gets a bit lighter, as the canyon widens. It was like having the cloak of death chasing me. Well OK, not that dramatic. More like a Mayan trail that lights up like a runway at certain times of the day. Yeah, like that. Dressed perfectly too, Post Toastie. Grrreat Ride!

Thought I had it all timed so perfectly. Got out about 15 min earlier than usual and had time to watch the final, "redmnants" of the day at the last switchback before heading out to the Luge. Set the lights to a lower setting but it was still not right, slow "thunky" descent. But the most frightening moment was at the end of the ride, on the road climb home. Hopefully, put an end to that. eh... other than that, Great Ride!

We both looked at each other kind of funny, then went our separate ways. He a lot faster than me. While not particularly spooky, I could feel something different in the air and was glad to get down the Luge intact. So far, just not in to the whole night riding thing.  Hey! 150! How about that? Had to "Stan up" the rear tire, it was ready. Finished that in record time and was on my way! Dropping down Concourse, wind in my face, and stinging rain drops! Nah! just kick up from the front tire. Park was empty except for the usual hikers. I messed with old guy the other day as he lifted his weights, and they really caught the humor and appreciated that. Bonding day after day, while just passing by. Thought about cutting all the extra credits out of the ride to "save time". Nopers! Hit them all. Resolved to the fact it was going to be a dark descent on the Luge. And it was. After coming to that conclusion, it turned out to be quite the sensational solo stormy (not) twilight dark, owl-eyed climb to the top. Torched the lights at the top and, gingerly made my way all the way down. Slowest in a long time, no flow. Cooks was empty. Grooved on the tunes for the climb home. Mountain Biking is good.  Be they ever so humble... our local trails are pretty damned good too! Back on local dirt. Thrilling descent right from the start. Catching perfect air at all the right places, felt like I was mtnbikeJ or someone. Not sure what it was, but in rare form I totally railed that descent. (Maybe it was the 2lb lighter bike, or the increased confidence)? Out on STT, it was the twilight of surprises. First, I spooked 5 Deer on the trail. 4 went down, 1 went up. It was all cool and we all looked back and gave it the nod. Then, at the top of FU hill I got surprised by a descender. It was all cool and we gave each other the nod. Thrilling twilight and sunset tonight and I caught it all. Dark enough at the top to turn on the lights, so I thought. Next time, it might be better to either wait for total darkness or cat-eye it down. Tonight, I blame the lights. I could not see squat on the Luge. And! my helmet kept knocking my glasses down my nose. Bleh! Still... a Grrreat Ride!  Other Comments

Doin' the needful! It was all about responsibilities and getting stuff done this weekend, with work thrown in the middle. Not ideal, but it won't be long for the MTB'n to be the top-priority again. Soon, but not soon enough. Despite all that noise, this was still a terrific twilight ride with all that wonderfulness that twilight brings; not the least of which were the far off ridge shadows, where there is only the glimpse of movement, a 1000 yarda away, across the canyon. Rode the RIP but still managed a respectable pace. Dropped the Luge in the last remnants of twilight, pulled in to the garage just at dark. Perfecto! Grrreat Ride!  Other Comments

Nice little cruise. Shocked ol' trobe1 at the stables, he entering, I was exiting. I get that expression alot, you know, fear and disgust, then, sometimes, relief. Flight or fight? Whiting was a bit crowded, but STT was all mine. Gloomy and gray though, and that's not my favorite. Donned a long sleeve jersey, even. A few Deer in Whiting on the descent, but no critters after that. Seemed like perfect conditions too. All in all, a Grrreat Ride!  Other Comments

Superb sunset sojourn with a simply fantastic itunes mix. Thought I was California Dreamin' with all the classic California bands and tunes. But the one that always gives me chills is Soul Sacrifice (Santana, live at Woodstock). And it is a great beat to climb to, if you can keep up (I cannot). Really Great Ride!

Later start than intended, but enough time to get the ride in while still enjoying a nice solo pace. Handful of riders in Whiting, and 3 others on STT, I guess that's Friday light. I miss the warmth already, and especially the ridge shadows. But I'm sure it will all be back again. Great solo Ride!

Late start, intended to go to OC, but not. Did not see another soul in Whiting, until I got to 4 Corners (the social center of Whiting). Strong cool breezes after a sweltering climb up Borrego and Mustard were most welcome. Extra delighted to chat with Terry at 4 Corners. As expected, plenty of breezes on Modjeska and STT (when will the locals realize it's not OK to treat Modjeska Grade as a race course?). Had the place mostly to myself as I realized Old Camp was no longer practical, before dark. Dropped in to "cruiser mode", and low-rided it all the way on through, taking time to soak in the spectacular views and the sensational golden sunset. I really enjoyed the ride - downright deeply satisfying. Great Ride!

Still, the antonym of strong, which looked to be more of a bummer than it usually is as I saw a cluster of riders beginning to mass together at Whiting. I hoped I could stay out front, and I did. Never saw them again, but it was an endless line of riders on STT too. Still, I managed to keep in my own zone - that of every pedal stroke requires effort, and counts. Gotta love that 29er glide. It was sweltering in Whiting and I needed (no, really, I needed this) to get out on the cool, breezy ridges right quick. So I skipped the usual Cactus/Saddleback Stables route (so much safer for crossing SCR) and dropped down directly from 4 Corners. But, most unfortunately, the cool breezes were nearly non-existent this evening (a rarity). Got all the way to the bottom of the Luge before I actually started to feel a bit better. Drank a ton of water, so maybe I was finally reaching hydration. Powered it up Ridgeline to home. Great Ride!

Really late start kept me calculating the whole time. And, by my calculations, I should be able to make it to the bottom of the Luge before it is too dark. (You see, I did not have a light)! Official gorgeous sunset occurred just as I made the 2nd to last switchback climb to the Luge, so I really started to put some effort in to it. Nice to feel good and strong again (been hydrating all day). Whew! Made it to the bottom of the Luge in twilight darkness, slapped on the rear flasher light and darted down Live Oak. By the time I got to Cooks, it was for real dark. No worries, it's a roadie climb all the way home. Terrific twilight jaunt, with sensational red colors. Of course, nobody could see me because I was dressed in red too! Twas indeed, a Great Ride!

Ruttin' around. Such incredible weather! Got an earlier start and was thinking Old Camp all the way (I really think I could have made it), then suddenly, just before the step-over pipe on STT, without warning, mysteriously, and sinisterly, my battery died on my ipod shuffle. Sigh... the thought of being left to my own thoughts for the next 2 hours was too much too handle on such a fine Friday evening. I easily, perhaps foolishly, even lackadaisically, downright lazily, could be calmly, took the right turn down the Luge, without ever looking back. But, I did look to the left and delighted in seeing my streaking shadow clear across the canyon as I breezed on through. A sensational late afternoon ride for ridge shadows, but by the end I realized I probably would have bonked if I pressed on. As such, it was a... Great Ride!

Freakin' Groundhog Day ride - ugh... I mean, it's a great ride and all, but I really need to get away. Instead, I have nice and spotlessly clean tile floors. (On your knees scrubbing is cross-training, right)? Saw just one rider in Whiting, and 2 on the Luge (struggling). Hey, at least I felt good the whole ride, AND!  Kind of cruisin', kind of not. As usual, the initial descent through Whiting just felt, awkward. Made all the lights on Portola, that helps.  Late start, like, just enough time start. Well, not really. There was enough time. Right? What's this? Wow! that's a mighty large thorn there in the front tire. Puli it out! Pull it out! psssssttt. Stan's filled it immediately. Nice. Off I went, temps were great, filtered sunrays in the Oaks, ridge shadows, this ride had it all. Feelin' real good about the descent on the Luge, dropping through the "S's", around the blind corner only to run up on a Skunk! Doh! Sorry buddy! I was pretty sure I was moving too fast to be sprayed, but certainly I rudely barged through. Maybe even roughed him up a bit. Nobody likes that! Great descent on Live Oak, into the setting sun, as I made my hard right at Cooks, I damned near t-boned a wrong way motorcycle. Groovin' along on home and Richie Rich pulls up on his new moto and we chatted a bit. Pulled in to the driveway just at sunset. Gee whiz! I figured with OTH starting up again, and a late start, it would be a quiet ride. I figured wrong. Great Ride!

Had to work last night, so no ride, and no Le Tour. Watched the 2x ascent on Alp de Huez tonight. Freekin' incredible! I so want to go and be in that party! Wow! Ride tonight was ultra-mellow after a real tough week (covering for the boss, who hasn't enjoyed that, eh?). Here's to a better week next week, but not looking forward to Tour de France withdrawals. What a race! A few riders in Whiting, and super-solo on STT. Caught sonme incredible ridge shadows, but my favorite is always on the Luge, across Vulture Crags - way on the other side of the canyon. You gotta be there at just the right time, and you gotta look real fast. It's the small things that keep mtb'ing so delightful. Rode the RIP, a bit more effort, but the silent ride was most appreciated. (I think the Jet needs some special attention). What was it!?..... a Great Ride!

Dropped to recovery pace the rest of the ride, even skipped Cactus and Saddleback Ranch. Felt much better on Modjeska Grade and STT - superbly solo, shady and cool breezes. Not another soul.  Late start, took my bikes in for some professional bike love. Thanks Tim!, as always! I knew it would be close on daylight, but I also knew I could make it. Super-solo, not another soul on STT, surprisingly, as the conditions and temps were perfect. Even better on the now silent bike. Finally traced out that annoying pedal tick. I was so far behind usual time, instead of glowing orange as I dropped Live Oak, I was awash in yellow on the initial STT climbs. Too late for ridge shadows too, but ever on the lookout for critters, (nada). Rolled in to the garage just after sunset.  This ride tried to disappoint, but could not. I thought my annoying squeek problem was solved. Not. So I went freakin' nuts with the spray lube. I soon found out it was in the seat rails and was getting worse, because I sprayed them. Amid all that I forgot to air up my tires, which I discoverd at the bottom of Concourse with a gentle sidewall roll. ugh.. Too lazy to pump with my picollo pump, and too cheap to sacrifice a CO2, I pressed on. And rolled the sidewall 2x - I don't like that. Figured to fix it at the entrance to Whiting, but found myself having to push the pace more than desired to stay ahead. Never did get around to adding air, and as I climbed Modjeska Grade I realized it was the Jet setting the pace. The annoying, relentless seat squeek and middle ring-30 seemed just perfect, so I went with that and slow-rolled it all along the rest of the ride. And I was rewarded with spectacular ridge shadows, some were rare double-shadows. Slow roll proved to be the Great Ride!

Let's see - new wheels, new tires, new brake pads, new rotors, and that awesome new fork - it was all "gnu" to me. Riding partners were riding in SS mode, but I enjoyed my gears. When it was my turn to pull, hehe, I dropped to a lower gear than them - an old roadie trick. Didn't work, they went around. Rightfully so, they're old roadies too. What a treat to actually drop down the Luge and engage in conversation. I can't remember the last time I did that. So it was not all good - I realized tonight that my solo pace is not the same as the group pace. Gotta ride with more SS'ers I think. Great friends on a Great Ride!

Had big ambitions today of Whiting/Old Camp, but my mind and ambition was writing checks my legs could not cash. So I made the right turn at the Luge. Really quite a beautiful afternoon. A few folks in Whiting, but not another soul on STT. Good thing too, after climbing Modjeska Grade I was all about cruiser mode. As is often the case for me, the highlight of the trip was seeing my shadow way on the other side of the canyon as I crossed the narrowest section of the Luge. Woohoo!  Later start than usual paid off (kind of) in temps. WAY too many folks in Whiting for my taste, but out on STT just a handful of riders and the coolest of breezes. Casual ride, but a bit stressed by funny shock noises that only I would hear (known as a "noise hearer" from back in my Jeep'n days). Got home and found the shock to be down 50 lbs pressure.  Nice relaxed recovery pace on the Jet. Taking advantage of OTH emptiness. 2 rattlesnakes, one in Whiting got out of my way with no todo, the other on STT was mean as could be. Reminded me of Art Tuttle, perfectly positioned in a spot there is no going around and all pissed off. Finally, some other riders came along, one with a water bottle, that did the trick.  Rode the Jet, much faster on the climbs, not so plush on the descent. But who knows? maybe that will change, like in the next 2-3 days or so. hmmmmm...??? I was treated to a short visit by a Bobcat on STT. With the conga line of riders cruisin' STT, I was honored he chose me to show himself. He jumped into the bushes and I know he did not take off, so he was well hidden as I looked for him but never found him. Cool.  Got a later start than intended. Just did not have the power today and I knew it would be a slow-roller cruise, with just enough time to finish before dark. Cruisin' along in my own little world when TBlazen catches me on Saddleback Ranch trail. Somehow I talked him in to joining me to the Luge. (I think the IE guys call it "mountainesing" - very appropriate). We had a pleasantly paced ride to the Luge, then James had to go his way and I mine. Took him out for a couple quick road climbs, it's tough dragging his butt around but I think he'll make a good companion.  So there I was, starting up STT with a sensational sunset situated over my shoulder. Rolled off trail a couple times while gazing in awe. Now a brilliant golden yellow splashed across the reflected ocean and bounced right to the very mountains where I was pedaling. And I had all this to myself. Shock and awe at its best. Got to the top of FU hill just moments after the final sinking of the fireball. It was so captivating, I did an "ahhh Sh$$" and hung out, took pictures, and just flat out enjoyed natures nightly gift. Of course, that meant I would descend the Luge with just the one handlebar light I brought, and it was awkward (but worth it). A fine time of the year, when it's warm. Greater Ride!

Nice day off work. Whiting was nice and not too windy, half of STT was windy, but on the leeward sides it was calm and comfortable. Couple good gusts kept it all real interesting. Rode with DIRTULS, she enjoyed the ride after a long hiatus. We got hit by a massive gust, dust devil about halfway down the Luge. What a great picture that would have made. Fantastic forever views once again, can't get enough of that! Great Ride!

Whew! Slow-roller today. I am quite sure my tires are at 20psi, not the usual 29. I failed to check them and that is the ONLY logical explanation, right? Rockin' tunes though, boy! Soul Sacrifice - Woodstock, and the guy was only 18! (How I wish I was there, well, except for the filth. But, I was definitely at Cal Jam 1 and I think 2 too. That was a scene too. Oh yeah, back to the ride). A few folks in Whiting, but STT was all mine. Nice sunset, but not like yesterday. The drop down the Luge was pretty nice as I raced the last remnants of daylight. Stopped at Cooks to say "hey" to my friends, J&S. Rode back toward home together, they just getting started, in the dark. Me, sluggish, but just finishing. I guess not every ride is fast and strong, but every ride is... a Great Ride!  Other Comments

Fabulously fierce fun! Real fast descent from Concourse, solid sprints at the lights, feelin' good! A few hikers and riders in Whiting, but STT was all my own. Climbed in that sweet surreal, sensational, sensuous, scarlet sunset. Simply nothing like it! Hung out atop FU hill and watched the sun bomb on Catalina. What's that? Santa Barbara Island even further in the distance. Truly, a killer sunset. Then the race was on to get to the bottom of the Luge without lights. Even with a stop to slip on my windbreaker I made it with ease. Flicked on the lights for the cruise back home, a big ol' cheshire grin on my face. In a week or so, I won't need the lights at all. File this one in the category of... a Great Ride!

Climb, climb, climb toward personal year end goals. Looks like I might make this one. This was a half and half ride. The first half through Whiting was all twilgiht, but started some time before sunset. The other half, the STT/Luge portion was well after sunset. I owl-eyed it to the top of FU hill, then reluctantly turned on the light. Could see the Camp Pendleton Marines playing some sort of night games and lighting the area up with what looked liked parachuted flares. The red ribbon of sunset lingered forever, loved that! I have determined the Luge is far more fun in daylight. I was no slouch tonight, but never really felt the flow. Cooks parking looked real full, what a contrast to last night when there was not a single vehicle. Too funny. Well, anyway, it was a Great Ride!

Wow! I mean, like, really really solo, like nary another soul solo. hehehe.. Cool! Started out expecting some rockin' tunes and was kind of disappointed when I discovered my ipod was dead. Dead dead. But it did not take long to descend into Whiting and forget about lifes little worries (the big worries are still there) and amaze in the glory that is the oak-filtered sunshine, simply gorgeous. How can someone just fly past that? Not me. Slow-rolled all the big climbs and let my mind wander. Needed some serious wandering. STT was so quiet, but not at all spooky. Just me, nature, and ol' Jupiter shining bright over Saddleback. Kind of cool, actually. The Luge was a blast! Good flow for a night ride. Thank goodness it's Friday!, eh? Great Ride!

Superb solo sunset sojourn. Gorgeous oak-filtered sun rays throughout Whiting. You know? I almost gave up at 4 Corners. But I have a year-end goal in mind, was prepared, and pushed on. At first the sunset looked to be a dud, but as other analogies in life, it got much better as it aged. I was stoked to once again be in the right place at the absolute right time. Oh my! Climbing FU Hill, not only did my legs engage, I caught the Moon rise and the pastel pinks and deep reds of the lingering sunset. The same sunset I had already given up on as a dud. How's that for irony? To show my appreciation and to be an engaged participant I turned on my bright red flasher! The colors of the sunset lingered all the way to the last switchback, when the near Full Moon kicked in the lumens to the top of the climb. After that, I provided the lumens. Struggled with the Luge, no flow. Been awhile since riding it at night. Found a pair of prescription Oakleys at Live Oak - PM me. Awesome Sport! Great Ride!

Peaceful and calm in Whiting. Plenty of Deer to make you smile. A bit windier out on STT, but not bad at all. Kind of surprised, a steady stream of riders out on STT. Had great flow on the Luge and was thankful for that, I toned it down a bit so as not to over play my good fortune. Timed it all so perfectly once again, rolled in to the garage just at dark.  Nice critter count despite being in a rush - 1 doe, 1 forkie, 1 infant bobcat, and 1 7=point buck. Had I not been in a rush and opted to skip Cattle Pond, I would have never seen the majestic beast. Just was not feeling it tonight but managed to tough it out. Finished the Luge just moments before needing lights, I like that.  Nice early AM ride. A few hikers in Whiting where it was nice and cool. I thought about a 2nd loop, but opted to stick with the plan and do the Luge. It was downright hot on the Modjeska Grade but cooled off once I reached the ridges and shade. I rode the Jet and the Luge was not nearly as smooth as when riding the RIP.  Took one last glimpse over my shoulder at the top of the very last climb on STT, the last sliver of sun had just plunged from sight. The previous 20 min or so was like being in a time warp, it was that cool! I reached the Modjeska gate at exactly 7pm. Sunset was at 7:32 or so, that gave me about 45 min of sufficient light to reach Live Oak. Challenge at hand, off I went. Not another soul in sight. It began rather slowly, but became more noticeable by the time I reached the step-over pipe. I was now totally awash in an ultra-relaxing and mesmerizing orange. As I climbed FU hill it became surreal, coupled with my long shadow I floated up that hill. Around the corner it was shady for a bit, then I entered the aura of bright pink, fading to a magenta red. It is an incredible experience every time and always much appreciated. Wish you could have been there. Made it to Live Oak with no lights. Clipped on my tail light and cruised home in awe. Fabulously, Great Ride!  Other Comments

hehe.. so there I was back on the same trail I was on almost exactly 12 hours ago. Followed me own tracks even. Had fun with the hordes of hikers, but grew impatient with the running team. I dropped a couple of pounds out on Modjeska Grade, you can have them. Then the breeze kicked up, the power grew stronger and STT just kind of rolled by. Big crowd at the Flag so I dropped down the Luge quickly to stay out of the way. About mid-way and about chest high I passed by one angry Rattler, at least he sounded angry, heard him loud and clear but never saw him (or felt him). hmmmm.... what would you think to a Rattler jumpng in to your lap while riding the Luge? Hoping for an afternoon cool down. Great ride!

Spent more than a few minutes cleaning the RIP. (It needs more attention than the other bikes, you know). Even added some Stans to the front because the heat has dried 'em all out. Doh! Forgot to even check the back tire. Oh my! Loosey goosey! Had to add some air at Whiting entrance. Much more better. Slow-roll, really. But nice. Out on STT, saw 1 chaser way back there but managed to stay ahead without little extra effort. Once that RIP points downhill it's a whole different persona and I have been enjoying the Luge much more as a result. Dropped down Live Oak engulfed in the orange glow of the sunset, a fast rolling drop of blue. Great ride!

Waited and waited for the afternoon (evening) breeze, then went out on faith. It can only get cooler, and it was cooler in Whiting, but got warmer and warmer approaching Mustard. Mustard itself was not bad. Cheated my regular route a bit and dropped down Whiting Spur instead of Cactus/Saddleback Ranch (stables). STT was super-solo, not another soul, kept the pace so-so and relaxed - no heat issues here. Good thing, not much breeze either. So much for faith, eh? Want to drop the Luge way beyond your capabilities? Cue the music - "This is something called "I'm going home". Hopefully, by helicopter..." - a few close calls at the top, but after that - jammin'!! Dropped Live Oak right at sunset proper, pulled in to the driveway in the waning light. What do you think? Great Ride!!!  Other Comments

Fall is in the air. I can feel it, I sense it, and I can see it. Sure, I know the calendar says Summer, but time marches on. Hung out at the Flag and watched the shadows creep up the hills, very cool. The tree tops resist, but eventually all things succumb to darkness. Nothing can beat time, as the shadows demonstrate.  Started out with HalfAsst and DaveA. They were on a time crunch, I was not. Tremendously crowded in WhitingWe parted ways at 4 Corners. After Cactus I popped out at the stables. Much quieter on STT. Saw only 2 other riders, including Grimix on his big ride. Good to meet you. Had to make a few adjustments to the seat position after FU Hill, and I am still getting used to the Joplin Seat Post. Did not feel any flow on the Luge so I just cruised on through. Was kind of stoked to beat the guy on his motorized bike up SCR. He pulled away, laughing, but I caught him and passed him when we both turned up Ridgeline. Apparently those motorized bike cannot climb steeps. Too funny, this is what it has come to? Great ride!

A repeat of yesterday, well kind of, but a lot dryer (kind of, pretty humid). Right from the start did not really feel it. Then I got cut off by a right turn vehicle on Portola - I don't deal with that well, it's so pointless. For a few seconds? Really!? Finally, settling in to some climbing always makes me feel better and the pace just kind of picked up along with my mood. I think I worked out the kinks discovered in yesterdays ride and everything felt good. Aaahhh! The Luge was extra fine, good flow - "dyna-flow", good tunes. This bike simply rolls fast.  It's alive! The RIP is here! I was not going to allow a few raindrops get the best of me, off I went for the first adventure on my new ride. Awesome! Like it's name says "Rolls in Peace". I was aprehensive hanging a big ol' fat tire on the front and all, but it turns out this is no slow-rolling living room couch of a bike. As plush as it is, it is almost as spry as the Jet. And it climbs oh so well too! Whiting was gorgeous after a few raindrops, but I was most interested in reaching the Luge. Once out on STT, I had the whole place to myself. Love that! Started raining just as I was finishing the final climb but I knew I was home free by then no matter how hard it started to rain. Dropping the Luge in light rain and waning light, on a new bike - simply uplifting! What a treat too. Feeling pretty darned good about this bike project.  Late start but still plenty of time. Cruised through Whiting about the same time as a small group. It appeared they were all newbies on old school bikes, or maybe it was a vintage MTB ride? Some real old technology there, like a history lesson in MTB suspension as I passed them all on Borrego or Mustard. Popped out at the stables and was all alone from that point on. 'Nary another soul out on STT - actually, ever so peaceful. Good thing too as I was not feeling super-strong and enjoyed my own pace. All that single-speeding may be making me stronger, but at times it makes me feel weaker. I did not start feeling strong until I reached the top of Modjeska Grade, almost an hour in to the ride!  Nice ride tonight. Once again managed to miss the evil haunting Whiting lately. Don't need any of that! Kind of crowded in Whiting, at least for a Friday. Oh wait! It's not Friday? Well that explains that. Felt much better as I popped out of the stables and headed up Modjeska Grade. Far fewer riders on STT made for a more peaceful ascent. Hanging at the flag and Mr. Donald Jackson rolls by. Tossed a few rocks and beaned him on the head to get his attention. We all dropped the Luge for a few brews. I was one happy pedaler on my ascent home after 2 Drakes Amber. Had to use my flasher, pulled in to the driveway just at dark.  Very few riders in Whiting, and nobody on STT until I reached the bottom of the Luge. They had a flat but said they had it under control. Had a real good "groovy" going today, but did not overdo it by chasing rabbits and descending out of control. Downright surreal on STT with no one around - did not even think about trying to SS it. Me thinks my chain is making some noise to tell me this SS stuff is tough. It is already stretched beyond 1.0! A new drivetrain might be a nice gesture.  Solo, started out with tunes. Right in the middle of "Sweetleaf" my shuffle dies. Oh! the inhumanity of it all! Kind of crowded in Whiting. (Awesome trail work to re-route the yukky black water just after the currently wet sand trap). Headed on out to STT/Luge, and guess what? Crowded there too! Stopped to do some impromptu trailwork and got rid of the low-hanging dead tree near the top of the Luge. (I guess after 3 times of being beaned by it, it had become a bother).  Goodbye! Good riddance! Get away you frigid, wretched gray clouds! Hello - golden sunshine rays! What a rotten week for weather. No motivation.  Woohoo! Wild, Wednesday Whiting wind was wholly wrought with whirls, whips! What wonderful wilderness! (13)! All at once! Calm and tranquil in Whiting but I was eager to get the larger view STT/Luge offered. One, maybe two. raindrops as I popped out at the stables, but the wind was howling on SCR and Modjeska Grade. Had to keep that front wheel down to keep from blowing off like a kite! Sensational, dramatic skies as I ascended, already pushing a descent pace. Then it happened. As I was ascending the last climb, suddenly "Highway Star" pops into my ears. Enthused, I climbed with conviction and dropped to the Luge speedily. Cool. But not to be out-done, suddenly its the "Big Red Rocket of Love". One of my quickest descents on the Luge! A most excellent ride!  Other Comments

Whiting had a smattering of runners and bikers, but once I was on STT I was super-solo! Not another soul in sight! And on such a beautiful evening. Dropped the Luge 10 min before sunset and rolled in to the driveway just before dark. Sweet! Great ride!

Whiting is looking good, lots of little critters running around, a few spring flowers on their way. Just could not put any power to it today so I kept it low-key recovery pace the whole way. Slow-n-steady. Took time to enjoy some tunes and sunset backdrop at the flag. Feeling pretty relaxed right now and I'm gonna have a beer and a burger. Great ride!

Slightly later start than anticipated meant setting the pace in Whiting a little higher than I planned. But that was OK, I had purpose. Set the pace on STT a little higher than I felt capable of at the time, but the tunes helped. Got to the flag with plenty of time to enjoy the "brews and views" once again. Like, "deja vu" I dropped the Luge just minutes before sunset. Only this time I was riding the Jet and was able to get more of a flow and felt quite confident. Yeah, not quite "god on a bike"(Keith B), but still a very pleasant and peaceful adventure. Oh! and a... Great ride!

During the calm before the storm, Whiting-Luge I did roam. Yet again, timed it all so perfectly. (To insure so, I purposely did not bring any lights, except my tail flasher). Kind of busy in Whiting, well 5 or 6 others maybe. STT was calm and quiet. Finally was able to maintain some flow on the Luge. Rolled in to the garage just at dark - perfect! Great ride!

Errands, late, late start! Dropped in from the homestead and popped out of Whiting just at dark. Pedaled hard, I don't really like to break the rules. (I'm the one who always gets caught). Continued on over to STT/Luge. Not another soul. Dark as ink but that did not deter me. At least it was not winter cold, (yet). No tunes this ride so I was stuck with me own thoughts.  Kharma gave me the nod today - thank you! I will continue to try and be worthy. Kharma continued to smile and I saw that same majestic Buck in Whiting and then was a part of the spectacular sunset immersed in the red tinted hills. A blue speck in a sea of red. Whew!Great ride!  Other Comments

2 days off the bike and I had no power at all. None. And I got a much later than desired start. Saw 3 Deer in Whiting, 1 Forkie Buck and 2 Does - way cool. The buck was standing in the sunlight, quite majestic, really. Very nice sunset twilight climb once I got out on STT. Despite no power it was a very relaxing ride - just what I needed. Big day for me tomorrow. Great ride!  Other Comments

Sweet solo sunset sojourn. Late afternoons in Whiting are majestic. Caught the actual sunset while starting out on STT, and got the whole twilight experience all the way to top of the Luge. Used lights on the Luge. Good thing, by the time I reached the bottom it was truly dark. Still the slightest orange glow visible while dropping Live Oak, then darkness. Not a cold as I expected in Whiting, but breezy and cold on STT. Great ride indeed!

Maiden voyage for the new bike. Jet9 cleared for take-off! Aaahh, the bike feels and runs great! Sturdy, yet quick and nimble. The new fork is sheer bliss. Due to a mechanical issue on my buddies bike we popped out of Whiting in near darkness. Sorry for that little infraction. Cold temps would come and go as we climbed STT. The Luge on the new bike felt great, but I did have a tough time getting the flow. Luge is still pretty chopped up right now. Really, the only complaint I have is that the new bike does not appear to coast as fast on Live Oak (tight hubs maybe?). And that is not much of a complaint! Great ride!  Other Comments

Many of the old Oaks in Whiting have finally dropped their mighty branches! Like tired skeletons their broken, dusty branches lay beside them in a heap. Sad, but nature takes its course. If you look closely, some trees have practically caved-in on theirselves. Cat-eyed it to the top before using lights to drop down to the Luge. Not another soul on STT/Luge - still I could not manage a yodel. Sunset was a dud. Run in with a car going up Modjeska Grade (stupid residents, I recognize that car), AND going down Live Oak. ugh.. but I survived! Great ride!

Late afternoon start had me just above 4 Corners at the perfect sunset time. Well, actually the sun had already set but was a spectacular pink, then burnt orange. It was difficult to get motivated to ride today, still suffering. Certain problems seem to be lingering just as long as the colored sky tonight (and it went on and on). I am always glad when I do get out when I feel like this, but sometimes it's tough to be enthused too. Still, I knew I would regret not taking advantage of the incredible weather. I was sorry I stood up my buddy tonight, but I felt I needed a therapeutic solo ride tonight. Did not work. I did feel a certain rythm and flow on the top section of the Luge. And later, on the patio with burgers and beers, I did see 3 shooting stars in less than 2 minutes. The biggest was close, very short, with an actual tail. So, I've got that going for me. All in all, it was a Great "Big Ride"!

Splendid little romp through Whiting just before sunset. Sensational super-solo twilight climb on STT under dramatic skies and sunset. Very dark out over the basin. Owl-eyed it to the top. Occasional rain drop or 3. Dropped down the Luge into the dark. Caught quite a few rain drops while ripping down Live Oak. It was so exhilirating it just made me feel like yodelin'! (But I did'nt, not quite back to that yet. Looking forward to when I am). I did let out a few "Wahooooo!!!!'s" just to commemorate the moment. Really Great Ride!!

Late afternoon start, finished the Whiting loop first so as not to get caught in the park after dark. A few riders at 4 Corners, after that nobody as I headed out to the Luge. As I climbed, with great ambition due to the waning daylight, I was awash in a sensational blazing red sunset. It was like riding on the Red Planet (Mars). Everything was red! My blue jersey was now purple. Dropped the Luge with just enough daylight. Maybe it was the low light conditons, but I actually had a good flow going despite the trail being all chopped up. As I sailed down Live Oak I caught the final remnants of daylight. It was downright surreal. Then I had to deal with the realities of jerk drivers. Had the flasher lights going and all, still they had to get ahead and turn in front of me! Sigh... this is why I could never go back to being a roadie. Anyhow - Great Ride!

Early AM start, nice change of pace for me. Lots of folks out today. I am not so sure how I feel about the Luge anymore. It's so chopped up I just cannot seem to get any kind of a flow. I think I may start doing out-n-backs on STT to try something different. Large group of roadies at Cooks - Even had a roadie girl say "Hi!". It looked funny, usually its all leather, big bellys and beards. This time it was all tight lycra and colors. But it's all the same - eveybody pointing at each others bikes! Great ride!

Whiting? eh!? I don't even try to make the sand anymore, too much thrash on the drivetrain. Shoulder it and trudge on! Still a pretty route if nothing else. A little rain will go a long way here. Thanks Kioti for the much better reroute at the start. Speaking of Kioti, stopped and chatted a bit at the top of FU hill. Reminder the big OC Supervisors vote tomorrow regarding purchasing the land for STT trail access! Contact them -let your voice be heard! Anyway, back to more surrealistic things. Hung out at the top of the Luge and watched the hills turn deep red, then dark! Oops! time to go! Rolled in to the driveway and at dark, proper. Great ride!  Other Comments

Whew! Pulled off a fine aerial stunt at speed. My best ever? Was not ready for the rocky drop off at the bottom of the short steep on the backside of Whiting. Came in as normal, just as I saw the trail was changed I hit powder, got all squirrely, thrown to the right where the trail abruptly ends, and somehow managed to side jump to the left off the drop off, and managed to roll through all the rocks there on the left. Of course, nobody saw it. Too crowded - headed to the Luge. Great ride!

Nobody in Whiting, really. I knew I was feeling underpowered when I could not put together a sprint on the road. The sand is as tough as it has ever been and really sapped my energy. I ate a Hammergel and that helped me get up Modjeska Grade. Once on STT I was treated to a sensational sunset! Incredible! Winds kicked up and were howling! As I was setting up to drop off the flag hill, a gust caught me and OTB I went. Slid half way down the hill on my back! Yes. a bit windy indeed. Great ride!
