This route is composed of two of the best trails in South Orange County, the classic San Juan climb and the unforgiving Los Pinos descent. If you are one of those that has very good control over loose and steep terrain then Los Pinos is awaiting you, seems like that trail will take blood and skin out of all of those that attempt to ride it. This Route starts at the Bottom of San Juan and turns left at Cocktail rock for a fun fast way up to Blue Jay Campground, that's only the start, see directions for complete route.
Warning - recommend 'expert only' riders.

Flip05/30/10great day on the bike. 2 otb on pinos, but worth it! added out and back on chiquito to make this a full and tiring day.
Gerry Lattimer05/09/10Lots of crashes and blood spilled on this one. Truly epic ride with REH.
REH05/09/10Did this ride w/G.Lattimer,for the most part it was a fun ride, but I felt that Los Pinos SUCKED ASS !! It was an adventure thats for sure.
spicolli197604/24/10Contrary to Brian's beliefs, this is an EPIC loop. Great ride with Brian, Gerry, and Karl. Trail was perfect!!!
Hippydude02/22/10Rode with T- Robe1 Kenobe today. He must have joined the dark side today because, he rode like he was possessed. Good ride today except for the part where they did too much trail maintenance.(This is Pinos, not Cholla).Oh, and where was OTB Again and Thinkfast? M.I.A.
trobe102/22/10Another great ride on SJ & Los Pinos w Hippydude. Best I ever felt on this route. First time for the Blur on both these trails. Saw Hans Rey in the parking lot & talked to him & Brian Lopes up at Cocktail. Helped their buddy Ryno w his broken chain on the way up. Really enjoyed the Joplin on Pinos, was able to ride some parts that were HAB in the past. I agree w Hippydude, the trail work on Pinos is fine but some of it is taking the bite out of the challenge of the trail. Thanks Brian!
ThinkFast02/21/10Great ride with Eric. Legs were lame going up SJ, must be riding too much. Original plan was to go longer but my legs weren't up to the task. COLD at Cocktail but luckily no rain all morning. The recent dirt work on Pinos was a nice surprise. Missed Hippydud today, or I should say he missed out.
OTB_again02/21/10Awesome ride with Thinkfast...we climbed into the clouds and enjoyed some cool formations as they rolled over the Santa Anas. Troy said he wasn't feeling it but he rode pretty darn strong anyway! The Pinos trailwork is really sweet, thanks to whoever cherried out those problem sections.
milatime02/20/10Ibis-solo-pinos-epic
genusmtbkr502/13/10Great ride today. Temps were perfect for a ride like this. SJT a bit sloppy in spots near the bottom, but overall in great shape. Los Pinos always a grind, but well worth it. Lots of riders on San Juan. Perfect for it.
spicolli197601/30/10Great ride with Brian, John, Oscar Brett, Garren, Gerry, Mary. Trails were in perfect condition.
Hippydude01/25/10Los Pinos delivers, once again. Best trail conditions ever.It seems the more rain it gets, the better it gets...Rode with Trobe1 and UphillRider55. Missed OTB_Again and Thinkfast, on this one...
UphillRider5501/25/10Wow, that was one radical ride. Thanks Tom (Trobe1) and Brian (Hippydude) for the escort over this insane route. Both of you have technical beyond belief. My legs will be talking to me after all those hike-a-bikes. It was an epic journey.
trobe101/25/10Freakin Los Pinos - It was Epic today - Thanks Brian for talking me into this ride today. We got to show Uphillrider the ropes on this one. Nice job for your first time Craig! Brian & I were in a groove on the techy stuff today. Good times! The initial hike-a-bikes had a fair amount of snow on them.
Hippydude12/16/09Another amazing day on the bike. Thanks Tom and Eric for partaking in, one of the best backcountry trails, Cali. has to offer. We are so blessed.....
OTB_again12/16/09What Hippydude said! Another big backcountry effort with Brian and Tom aka trobe1. Perfect weather, unreal singletrack, great riders...only thing missing was ThinkFast! Brian was on fire today and it was a treat to watch - 100% on San Juan and tearing up Pinos. Nice to see Goldrunner and agitate1890 finishing up as we were heading out. Got some good pics and video today. Only bummer was my flat...lowered my tire pressure too much for Pinos. Thanks for the company guys...Bell Ridge awaits.
trobe112/16/09Ho Hum - just another quickie w/ Brian & Eric-Yea Right! It's been a while for me on Los Pinos but all went well. The HAB never gets easier.Great day out there with some good riding friends! Couldn't ask for better weather and temps. Saw goldrunner & agitate 1890 in the parking lot before we took off and Scott B on the way up.After that just 1 other rider the whole time. Met up w/ the Monday night crew afterwards for some dinner and good conversation at Selmas new Taproom in RSM. Another Epic Day!
Hippydude12/13/09Pinos is in the best shape ever. After the trail work and the recent rains, could not be any better.Sorry Roy and Troy,Brian mentioned Pinos, and thats all I needed to hear.(Knew you would figure it out).Rode with Brian E. and Carl....
ThinkFast12/09/09Middle portion of today's epic with OTB_Again. We spent most the ride down Los Pinos leap frogging each other taking pics and videos and having a great time. Trail was in good shape after the recent rain. Tom rode up to meet us then joined us for the climb up San Juan. Tom's seat broke on the way up. Luckily Eric had some electrical tape and Tom was able to get it to stay in place. I'm sure he would have continued up without a seat if he had to.
OTB_again12/09/09Part II - Pinos was incredible today after the rain. A little rutty in spots but that was a fair tradeoff for traction that is normally missing. Great to see trobe1 who rode up Pinos a bit to meet us. Cool to see Hans, Lopes, and crew railing down below Cocktail. Dan G. from the WS was chilling at Cocktail with a couple of buddies. Got cold again at Blue Jay so we layered up for the climb up the Wall. After that it was balls out to drop Bell before it got dark...we made it!
Hippydude11/29/09Another great ride today. Thanks OTB again,Thinkfast,Hermit, and Milatime for the good times...Good to see Royster71 at the beginning, and uphillrider55 at the end....
ThinkFast11/29/09Great ride with Eric, Brian, Ryan and Matt. Ran into a few people doing some big loops today. Good to see Royster, calepic and Uphillrider this morning. Recent dirt work on Los Pinos has tamed the lower switchbacks a bit. Good conditions today.
OTB_again11/29/09Epic loop with a great crew including Thinkfast, hippydude, Hermit, and Milatime. Royster71 was lurking around the parking lot this morning :-) Saw CalEpic and friends on the way up also. Windy and cool in spots on the way up. Pinos absolutely rocks...super fun descending and traction was very good due to the recent light rains. The adult beverages were tasty afterward. Nice to see UphillRider55 finishing at the same time...glad you didn't get hurt worse on your spill Craig!
Hermit11/29/09GT. Fun ride with Eric, Troy, Ryan, and Brian. Gusty wind was kinda chilly. Trail was in great condition after a light rain. Had no trouble on the hardtail.
spicolli197611/29/09Great ride with Dan, Brian, John, Brett, and Matt. My new frame is AWESOME!!! It just kept asking for more and Pinos definitely delivered.
milatime11/29/09First time on Pinos. Trail is fricken sweet. Good ridding with thinkfast, hermit, hippydude and OTB again.
martink11111/21/09First time on this route. Definitely a riding adventure (had to spray down my brakes to cool them off!) Had only one minor wipeout (tumbled off the trail- good thing the agave broke my fall). Rode with camera, tripod, and two lenses. Made it to Cocktail rock in 1:18:02 minutes. To Blue Jay in 1:59:28 minutes. To Los Pinos start in 2:27:07 minutes. 21.9 mph max
Rowsby11/08/09Rode with Rob, fun day.
Burgemeester10/25/09EPIC! This ride requires your A+ game - we cruised through everything in awesome time, but man, those hills we hiked up were unreal, one after the other and so on! Somehow we came out with no falls - don't ask how! Thanks Shine - your skills are insanely hectic! Remember...one finger breaking ;-)
Shine10/25/09Los Pinos is exactly like everyone said it was, lots of loose rock steep downhill sections and a dozen or so steep hike-a-bike sections. Lucky for Burgemeester and me, some group had performed trail maintanence yesterday to cut back the brush (thank-you!), the weather was fairly cool, and we were both crash free. That said, I will never do this route again!
kentonn10/19/09Fun route as always. Hot temps by the time I reached Pinos, felt it by the end of the ride. Drank nearly 200oz of water.
Hippydude09/30/09Amazing day for this ride. The temps. could'nt have any better. Trail conditions on pinos, not too bad. A little looser than usual, but really fun, very doable...
ThinkFast09/30/09Great ride with Brian. Been a while since I've done Pinos. It was loose, as to be expected, but really not too bad. Brush needs to be cut back in a few places so it was nice to run into a couple guys heading up to do some maintenance. We noticed a lot of foot prints towards the top of Pinos, obviously from people searching for the lost ultra-runners last week.
Ladera Dave07/03/09Nice day off, a little hot not bad. lot of flies at the top.
MoonDogg06/26/09Most hated ride ever. When I was done, I felt like it was all uphill. The ROI on Los Pinos is in the negative. Definitely NOT worth the effort. Some of the technical sections toward the end would be fun if you weren't already exhausted from pushing your bike for days....
MoonDogg06/26/09San Juan rules, Los Pinos drools. Hope you like pushing your bike, I don't care how light it is or how strong a climber you are.
Ladera Dave05/23/09Ran into Twich on his super loop ride and Jason the bike doctor and his friend, Great day.
singletrack03/12/09Soaked my feet in the hot springs afterward.
trobe103/02/09Bloody & bruised but not broken. Los Pinos doesn't get any easier the more you ride it. Took a couple of spills one of which was a hard OTB onto my head and arm - Ouch! Rode w/ Hippydude and his friend Mark. Great ride and good times as always. 1:05 up to Cocktail. That's a new PB for me I think. Saw smoke to the south, maybe at Camp Pendleton. Got windy and cool up at Los Pinos peak. Probably will take a breather from Pinos for a while. Saw the ranger in the pkng lot checking for pkg passes.
Hippydude03/02/09Rode with Tom (Trobe1)and Mark( Blind Lemon.) Pinos was the usual Nar , Nar. Even more so because it has gotten so loose.(It needs rain).Took the usual amount of blood and skin, but nothing major. Good times...
singletrack02/25/09Watch out for the water bars. Hit one at 30 mph and ended up entangled in manzanita.
trobe102/23/09Another great ride w/ Thinkfast and Hippydude. Always an adventure w/you guys. Los Pinos is quickly turning into one of my favorite trails. You better bring your "A" game if you are going to ride it. Took a couple of spills one of which was pretty hard but luckily I was ok. Legs felt great today. The views from up there are incredible.
ThinkFast02/23/09Fun times as always with Brian and Tom. Brian and I were fried from the weekend and Tom decided to punish us. Tom took a dirt sample on Pinos, glad he was OK.
Hippydude02/23/09Great ride with Thinkfast and Trobe1 . Los Pinos took some blood and skin today. But I guess ya gotta pay your dues to ride such awesome singletrack !
trobe102/18/09Was planning on doing a solo ride at San Juan but when I pulled into the parking lot Thinkfast & Hippydude were there as well. They said they were doing Los Pinos and that I was going w/ them. First time on LP for me. Personally I thought it was great. Definitely some HAB but the reward is well worth it. Sounds like we hit it when conditions were epic. Big thanks to Troy & Brian for doing this with me. Great ride guys! Big adrenalin rush at the bottom of Los Pinos.
Hippydude02/18/09Amazing conditions today...Thanks Tom and Troy for the good times... Tom killed it for his first time on Pinos. (We added new San Juan for, well.. why not?)
ThinkFast02/18/09Lots of fun today. We added New San Juan as usual. Dirt conditions were outstanding for Pinos! The weather was perfect as well. Great times with Brian and Tom. When Tom pulled up at SJ we asked how much time he had, he said "all day", so we told him "you're coming with us". hahaha
IanH02/15/09Snow from Trabuco to well past Bell Ridge made for a bit more pushing! Trail was in amazing shape, awesome ride
singletrack02/15/09snow on Los Pinos peak, tacky the rest of the way.
Royster7102/02/09Thanks for the epic day Troy and Brian. The enchalada's were awsome! The views were amazing! If you dont mind hike a bike here and there this is a great trail. This has been on my to do list for a long time and been wanting to do it. Glad I finally got a chance to do it!
ThinkFast02/02/09What a great day. The weather was nice, a little warm maybe. Great company with Brian and Roy. Conditions were a bit looser than last week but still OK. Roy killed it for his first trip down Pinos. Glad you could make it Roy. Brian owned the lower section as usual.
Hippydude02/02/09Great ride with Troy and Roy...(Also did New San Juan for extra fun).
Rowsby02/01/09Rode with Kona Dave & Jeff. Great ride with perfect weather. Gnarly Dude!
Hippydude01/26/09Another good one with Troy... Trails are perfect, really tacky after the rains.
ThinkFast01/26/09Great ride with Brian. Cold above Blue Jay. Pinos was in fantastic shape, which allowed us to clean more of it than in the past. I was able to clean everything down to the lower switchbacks and Brian cleaned most of those. Brian had to ride the last few miles with a thorn in his front tire, didn't want to take it out and risk a flat. We saw a few groups of kids on a field trip on the switchbacks at the bottom of Pinos.
Rowsby01/25/09Rob & me. Kick ass ride if a little too cold! The trails in great condition. Rob had 3 crashes;-)
johno01/06/09Granny was there but she could only help so much. Thats when we hiked.
singletrack01/02/09Pinos is in great shape. Thanks to those who did work on it.
Hippydude12/27/08We also did Viejo Tie for some extra fun...Thanks Troy, Matt, Brad, John and Doug. Good times as usual !!
House12/27/08Great ride with Troy, Matt, John, Brian and Brad. Long day, though. LP got the best of me today.
Hermit12/27/08Great ride with Troy, Brian, John, Doug, and Brad. We did Viejo Tie for extra credit.
ThinkFast12/27/08Good day with Doug, Matt, John, Brian and Brad. We added New San Juan, Viejo Tie and upper Chiquito to the loop. My brake pads wore down to the clips on Pinos, good thing I had an extra set in my pack.
ThinkFast12/23/08Another mid-week epic with Brian. We added new San Juan for a little extra fun. Great conditions on the whole route. Good to see Paul, Roy and Tom on San Juan. LOTS of downed trees at Blue Jay. There was still a good amount of snow from the top of Trabuco to Pinos Peak. Los Pinos was the best I've seen it.
Hippydude12/23/08Great day for a ride. Pinos was as good as it gets... Good to see Tom, Paul and Roy on San Juan...
spicolli197612/21/08Pinos was awesome!!!!!! 4" to 1' of snow from Bue Jay all the way to a bit past Pinos peak. We had to hike all the way up the wall, and most of the way to the peak. It was a definite battle but well worth it when we were done. We got first tracks down untouched Pinos.
Mark W.10/12/08Nice day! Good ride with Brian, Matt, Jake. Scott rode to cocktail with us. Solid pace, no flats! I forgot how many hike a bike hills there were.
Hippydude10/11/08Thanks Mark, Jake, and Matt. Perfect weather,(nice and cool), great ride.No blood, and no mechanicals!
Hermit10/11/08Perfect day for Pinos...sunny and cool. Rode with c('.'c), Hippydude, and Mark W. Pinos is loose and rocky, but I don't think any worse than normal. We made pretty good time. No flats. Couple minor crashes only. Played it safe on the scary stuff.
singletrack08/10/08baking on Pinos today. Fell deeper into dehydration with 4 flats.
singletrack05/30/08front brake went out the last few miles of Pinos, 1 flat. Getting faster... reaping the benefit from 1 mi. swims
goldrunner05/10/08Road the Green demon! Goldie is out of commission :( Met Jake at top of the wall ready to Decend Los Pinos! Lot less decending than I thought. That trail was TUFF, no wonder we didnt see anyone else. Did this trail a little different, finished by climbing out of San Juan to Blue Jay, I was/am dead tired. Jake kept going & going, hope you got your fill of pain. Lot of peps coming down San Juan. Good to see JJ & Katfud..
singletrack05/07/08like going through a car wash
rleveque04/05/08Met my goal of not spilling blood on Los Pinos.
quad damage03/24/08Good Easter ride with Troy, Brian and Matt. Second time on Pinos was way better than the first. I can almost see having fun on it instead of being nervous. Had one bad endo but only suffered some bruises and scrapes. He is risen!
Hermit03/23/08Forgot to start my Garmin. :-( The heat wasn't as bad as I expected today, considering our late morning start time. Had a nice breeze up San Juan. The sun pounds Pinos, but at least it wasn't totally miserable. Stupid flies were abundant whenever we stopped. Confidence was high today so I attempted a lot of tough sections. Won some, lost some. Don't think Troy crashed once all day, not that I'm trying to jinx him or anything. ;-) Also rode with Ryan and Brian. Nice meeting you, Hippydude.
ThinkFast03/23/08Great ride with Matt, Ryan and Brian. Nice to have Brian join us on a long ride. Good day on Pinos with no flats and only a few minor spills. As usual Matt rode, and cleared, the toughest sections.
Jweezy03/23/08so sick...blew my old time outa the water started at 9 finished at 12:20...so much fun...saw some folks near the end...happy easter
Hippydude03/23/08Nice to meet Ryan and Matt.Troy was the only one who didn't take a spill, thats very impressive, considering the terrain! Thanks guys for the good times!!!
singletrack02/25/08a few puddles on San Juan. Los Pinos felt like I was riding on rails. Saw a bobcat at Trabuco trailhead.
singletrack01/30/08San Juan is nice and tacky. Los Pinos is tacky, but a few minor ruts. Riding Los Pinos after a week off the trails was better than sex. Time to eat now.
tfahland01/21/08did this ride with paul on 1/13/08. a great one. to the last poster, you only ate 2 powerbars, wow! i bring a sandwitch on this baby!
singletrack01/14/082 inner tubes- $6. 1 pedal- $10. 2 clif bars- $2. Listening to the frogs, crickets and a woodpecker after riding Los Pinos - PRICELESS.
spicolli197601/13/08All I have to say is WOW!!!!!! Rode with a couple of my warrior society buddies and they took me on a great loop.
PaulV01/12/08Did this w/ MOlson,DFT,Terry and Scott. If you want an adventure, look no further. This is a really good loop, a great climb followed by a true backcountry trail. Great views along the whole ridge. I really liked this route, very fun. Be sure you can ride on steep loose terrain and have some sturdy tires if you are thinking about doing this one, and bring along a sandwich, you'll need it.
singletrack12/23/07Happy Holidays
singletrack12/11/07A little snow at the beginning of Los Pinos. Trails are tacky right now.
singletrack11/24/07sore right knee and lower back- still a great ride.
singletrack11/12/07A few fallen trees and a lot of broken branches on Los Pinos from the Santa Ana winds. I removed the trees and most of the branches for next time. An eroded section desperately needs trailwork.
singletrack10/11/07saw Doug at Blue Jay
cH4os10/08/07BlueJay in 1:50, the Kenda Small Block Eights were faster that I am! Thanks DWHOUSE & HERMIT! Conditions were perfect! SS friendly 29er, at 32x20 was fun!
House10/07/07Superb day with Ch4os and Hermit. I survived!
Hermit10/07/07Sweet ride with Steven and Doug. Everything went smoothly for the three of us: no mechanicals, no flats, no crashes, good weather, cool breeze, fun times. We caught up with an STR guy named Steve just after Cocktail. He was missing his crew, but enjoyed the San Juan Trail nonetheless. For me, installing big grippy tires in preparation for this ride made all the difference. Cleaned almost everything except for a few tough sections toward the end, and the brutal hike-a-bikes, of course.
rushak08/11/07Felt great all the way until I hit Los Pinos and I bonked hardcore. Luckily c('.'c) was there to save my ass. Could hardly walk up the ridges on Los Pinos. Had to do alot of resting to get back into decent shape to ride down the rest of Los Pinos. It sucked. I think leaving at 10:30am was a mistake. Sun was scorching on Los Pinos causing me to overheat. Made it down in one piece. Los Pinos is a fun, challenging decent, but could do without the hike a bike. Thank Jake! You're my hero.
c('.'c)08/11/07We climbed up San Juan and that Main Divide grinder nice & easy, but when we hit Los Pinos everything fell apart. My riding partner (who usually kicks my ass) bonked hard. We had food, water, and we thought we were prepared for this kind of thing but we thought wrong. Don't think that once you've made it to the top of Main Divide that you've got an easy cruise back down to your car. Los Pinos is a mean, mean trail. Steep downs and then back up. Even the best riders will be doing some hikes here.
bluerider107/28/07It was a long ride. Whew!!! It was cooler during the early hours (0700 am). It was warmer and the breeze was hot around 1130 am. Got lost a little bit but we found Lazy e w ranch.
Winger07/16/07Quite technical, but most is rideable. The sun was the real killer. Thorns were also an issue as almost everybody flatted. Thx for the fun, Mark, Mark, Troy, Matt, & Ryan.
quad damage07/16/07Tough ride with the gang. Added 20 minutes to my time due to Garmin trouble. Need to do it again with better weather.
Mark W.07/14/07Great ride with the gang, but 5 flats. Wow!
Hermit07/14/07Another long tough ride with the gang. It gets HOT on the Los Pinos ridge. One hike-a-bike section is particularly long and dreadful. I lowered my seat and leaned way back for the downhills and that seemed to be the ticket. Out of 6 flats in our group, Troy had 3 of them! :-O
ThinkFast07/14/07Another epic ride with Mark W, Mark C, Ryan, Matt and Andrew. I had three of the six flats for the day. Arghhh!
