Lone Pine is the town, and Horseshoe Meadows and Whitney Portal is your challenge. Turn west on Whitney Portal Rd. right next to the Pizza Factory and drive to Horseshoe Meadows Rd.
Park here in the dirt, and get ready for some climbing. First climb will be Horseshoe. 21 miles with about 5500 feet of climbing. When you reach the top, turn around and head back for an awesome descent, which will take you close to 40 minutes even at high speeds.
Next climb will be on Whitney Portal road from the intersection. About 9 miles with 4500 feet of climbing.
This second climb will be tougher for sure, steeper and you will be tired from the first one. The good news is, once at the Portal, the General Store will have cold beers and tasty cheeseburgers waiting. After a break get ready for a super high speed descent back to the intersection.
Great ride with Brian, Nick, and Sol.
This climb has been on my list for a while, and it was as good as expected. Beautiful weather, epic climbs, and good company to be tortured in. Whitney Portal was much tougher then Horseshoe but the cold beer and cheeseburger made it easier, a bit.
One helluva ride with Kris, Brian and Nick. Made the decision to head up at 10pm. Arrived in Lone Pine at 3 am. Started riding at 8am and finished around 4 pm. Got home around 8pm. What a day! Temps were great. Whitney Portal was a bitch...we all hit over 50 mph on the way down.
