| bikesurfski | 07/27/10 | Nice cool start under a cloud cover most of the way up to Cocktail. Followed Jim the Fireman and his friend up to Cocktail where we enjoyed swapping stories--maybe a couple more active geoladders members if they can swing a Garmin. Black gnats still active. | |
| Greo10 | 07/19/10 | just got off the plane from KC and its hot | |
| Phishin Paul | 07/18/10 | Rode solo up to BJ and then met Jeff, Dave, Mark and JJ for the rest of the ride. Not as hot today but still warm on the trail. | |
| bikesurfski | 07/17/10 | 8am start at 70 degrees. Near start, a rider coming back said a bee swarm made him turn around. Other riders warned of bees as they came down. Saw the swarm, waited for it to calm down, then passed ok. Could tell there had been a good rainfall in the last couple days. Met 4 guys who had shuttled up to Blue Jay the night before, camped, and then were shuttling back down today. At 1pm it was 100 degrees--used a liter up and a liter down. | |
| bikesurfski | 07/10/10 | Started out @ 65 degrees, worked up a sweat by Cocktail, drank the well dry at Blue Jay. Lots of riders out. Anyone who started near noon looked like a lobster coming up. Hello, summer--going to have to start around 5am as the heat increases--got up to 80 degrees after noon. Some cloud cover at times. Hate those helmet and earphone-grabbing bushes. | |
| bikesurfski | 06/26/10 | A little warm on the climb up. Good conversations at Cocktail and a lot of shuttlers today. Another downed Oak tree on Old San Juan above the meadows--bark beetle damage. New San Juan still an overgrowth battle. Lower San Juan has some sections that were aggressively cleared (chain saw?) leaving a wide trail and jutting stumps :( | |
| bikesurfski | 06/13/10 | What a difference from cloud cover and fog yesterday to full sun today. Everyone was saying that New San Juan is way overgrown, so I stayed on Old San Juan (still turned my white shirt green from the bushes, & brown from the dirt). Black flies and horseflies pretty rampant above Cocktail. Several riders out | |
| Mike Honcho | 06/12/10 | Great ride with Warhorse this morning! | |
| drg | 05/29/10 | Great Day !! | |
| bikesurfski | 05/18/10 | Several weather changes up San Juan today--from shirt sleeve comfort half way up to Cocktail, to in-the-clouds cold, drizzly, water-bomb bushes to the upper meadow--then amazing sunshine up to Blue Jay where I sunbathed and thawed out. Sunshine back to the Meadow, then overcast, cool, perfectly tacky, dried out bushes and fast all the way down. Just a couple other riders who finished early. Now, if we can just find a Telonics near San Juan. | |
| GMulato | 05/15/10 | First time on San Juan, hopefully not the last. What a great trail. Had a great time with Mike Honcho. | |
| Mike Honcho | 05/15/10 | Great ride with GMulato today. The ride included some crashes, a mechanical, a rattlesnake and a damn good time, can't wait to do it again! | |
| trobe1 | 05/13/10 | Another great day on San Juan w Hippydude. I just never get tired of this trail. We had 3 encounters w rattlesnakes today. 2 of them were in the brush off to the side and warned us that we were getting close. That rattle gets the heart beating a little faster! Beautiful day out there and only saw 2 other riders while riding. 3 others getting ready in the parking lot when we finished. Somebody left a biking shoe in the parking lot. One OTB on the way down when I took my eyes off the trail. Doh! | |
| Hippydude | 05/13/10 | Did this with Trobe1. Fun ride as usual...Saw 4 snakes today, crazy ! Did New San Juan to Blue Jay and back. | |
| goldrunner | 05/12/10 | Always fun doing SJ. Cool temps, no traffic except for two Deer towards the top of Blue Jay, and always have to throw in at least one OTB, why couldn't it have been Mark ; ) Also heard a swarm of Bee's in the parking area relocating, could hear them but never saw them, very loud like a couple Helicopters or something. Thanks for the ride Mark.. | |
| agitate1890 | 05/12/10 | another great day on san juan,saw quite a few quail,one deer and smelled a nearby skunk[no,ben was down wind].even stayed on the bike today,what a deal.thanks goldrunner.. | |
| tweasol | 05/04/10 | Nice morning on the trails w/ quickflip.. who was stoked to ride SJT for his 1st time, nice job. Ran into bikesurfski @ cocktail, good talking to you - nice bike! | |
| quikflip27 | 05/04/10 | Thanks again Tweasol for the schooling me on San Juan 101. Has to be one of the nicest trails around, kind of like a sampler of all the local trail types. Chatted with bikesurfski at cocktail, good to meet you Wayne. Found a small rattler, then bit the dust in a chute, bending a bar end and cracking my seatpost. About time for an upgrade...
Happy trails everyone!
| bikesurfski | 05/04/10 | Crossed paths with a small rattlesnake, and making a tight turn before Cocktail I rudely discovered I had set my new Candy C clip-ins too tight so when I went over the handlebar I couldn't unclip, twisted my ankle, broke my fall with my left shin and arm on the rocks. Good to see Josh (Tweasol) again and meet Ivan (Quickflip) at Cocktail as they were coming down from Blue Jay. Tacky trails and cool days are gone. New EX9 is a great climber--made all the lower switchbacks and most of the uppers. | |
| STEVO CARRILLO | 04/25/10 | Great ride w/ Goldrunner, One Flew OTB, Brad, Mike Rauls, Evilbawb, and Agitate1890. What a beautiful trail above Cocktail, was a 1st time for me.... The decent all the way down was classic with Mark and Ben , right up my ally, thanks guys. | |
| agitate1890 | 04/24/10 | great weather, great trail and great group to ride with.thanks for sched, this john.took one trip off the the trail just to see how much give the bushes had..fun time..evilbawb came home and ran a few miles, guess we should've climbed back up with ben.. | |
| One Flew OTB | 04/24/10 | Fun day on the bike w/Stevo, Brad, Mike Rauls, agitate1890, evilbawb, and goldrunner. Brad broke his deraillure hanger AND had a flat. Not his best outing. Great weather and great group to spend the day with. Thanks guys! (Took Old San Juan on the way up to Blue Jay) | |
| evilbawb | 04/24/10 | nice group ride | |
| goldrunner | 04/24/10 | Pleasure before pain, for the most part!(1 crash) Meet up w/Mark, Evil, Stevo, John, Brad, & Mike, at Blue Jay and descended with them but came back by myself, wussies : >) Don't recommend doing this loop backwards, the descent really sucks the energy out of you. The climb out was slow & painful and may haunt me in a couple of days, I fell over in some freek'n Oak : <( Will see if my Tecnu before & after works, cross your fingers or I'm going to rub pus from my blisters on you : p | |
| Jr Munoz | 04/21/10 | Fun ride with the tea party folk ! dont know why but they decided to have lunch right next to the worst outhouse after climbing all the way up there ??? maybe it was the hit ben took from a hidden branch ? or maybe they have orders from the Palin people to keep a lookout for recruits(: | |
| Hippydude | 04/20/10 | Great ride with Trobe1.. Stats reflect doing Viejo Tie loop, for added fun. | |
| trobe1 | 04/20/10 | Good ride w Hippydude today. Stopped at OTB-Again's house before ride to do a little rear tire maintenance. Thanks Eric! Just as we were leaving Blue Jay to head back down, it started getting very windy and a light rain started to come down. Once we got lower it got nice out again. Only saw 2 other riders out there today. Hit Viejo Tie for a little extra. | |
| IceCreamAndCake | 04/19/10 | San Juan on a Monday, perfect.Almost fell off my bike when a rattlesnake sounded off on the side of the trail as i was climbing by,never saw him though. | |
| agitate1890 | 04/18/10 | fun ride with ozzie and ben.. | |
| goldrunner | 04/18/10 | Nice to be on something other than fire road for the last couple of rides, and this is always a treat. Took the blunt end of a broken tree branch to the helmet, knocking me off my bike. Hurt like hell, but could have been a lot worse if the branch was any lower. Semi-recovered and off and running with the crew. Did some one order newspaper service up here? : p | |
| trobe1 | 04/07/10 | Good solo ride on San Juan. It's been a while. The wind kept the temperature comfortable while climbing. Lots of lizards out including a horned toad lizard. Saw about 5 riders descending while climbing and that was it. Nice day out there! | |
| bikesurfski | 04/06/10 | Spectacular day. Trail still tacky--a few puddles here and there--must have gotten a good rain. Lots of lizards and a few riders out. | |
| goldrunner | 04/03/10 | Troupe ride with Tim & Michelle and their friends Andrew & Calie from Canada, Ayyy! Lots of shuttlers today but it is Saturday. No DNA samples left by me : )) | |
| Hippydude | 03/31/10 | Good ride with Thinkfast.. Set out to do Pinos, did this instead because, very cold up top with, no cold weather gear, was starting to rain,(Pinos was in the clouds). These are all the excuses I could think of. I am sure Troy, will think of some more, LOL... Very easy pace. | |
| ThinkFast | 03/31/10 | Fun ride with the dude. Cold and damp at Blue Jay so we bailed on our original plans to do Pinos. Hit New San Juan on the way back. | |
| bikesurfski | 03/30/10 | Started out driving through the rain that gave way to intermittent sun and clouds on a beautiful, perfect San Juan day. | |
| tcgeez | 03/18/10 | Good to see my old friend SJCT. has it been over ten years already? you've changed a little since the last time i rode you. Apparently you've received some tender and competent care over the years, and you are better than I remember. looking forward to seeing you again. | |
| Gerry Lattimer | 03/13/10 | Fun ride with Randy and Randy. Parking lot was full at the bottom with so many trail users. | |
| REH | 03/13/10 | This ride was a blast, rode w/Gerry and Randy.Weather could not have been any better, but their were a lot of riders out today for some odd reason, more then normal. | |
| tweasol | 02/23/10 | Solo. Really nice day. Good to get some miles in before more rain...I felt good today, maybe it was the new carbon shoes... ha, ha... Had an awkward slide near the bottom, a stick made its way under my glasses and very close to my eye & left a small gash there. Very lucky. | |
| Rowsby | 02/15/10 | Great day to be out riding in the sun, its 76f here in Orange County. You have to love Southern California! | |
| TomG | 02/15/10 | Trail is in bad shape, slow day took part of chiquito which is in great shape | |
| Phishin Paul | 02/07/10 | I went in to the garage today and was attacked by a Ventana. She had chosen me so I jumped on her saddle and stuck my tail thingy into her tail thingy. We were now one.
Plus Viejo loop after coming back down from Bluejay. Not sure on extra miles?
| bikesurfski | 01/31/10 | Thanks to everyone who has helped maintain one of the top trails, even through the rains--including the part of the trail on the lower third that was falling away. Fast, tacky, sunny day with a good group of riders out today--some of us getting tickets in the parking lot. Upper San Juan rutted but ridable, so I took the back way-- a fun drop right now. The whole drop is a blast. | |
| UphillRider55 | 01/24/10 | It’s great to finally get out and RIDE. Can’t remember the late time I had 6 days in a row without riding. SJT was great, mostly dry with some messy spots. The rocks on the new SJT after CR are more numerous and wet. Highlight of the day was meeting Doug (ZunGu); I lost the camera again and was heading back to find it when we met. He had just past me, found the camera and was riding back to return it. Thank Doug that was very thoughtful. | |
| zunGu | 01/24/10 | Was a great day to ride San Juan. Nice to finally meet Uphillrider and T-Bone. | |
| roliepolie | 01/10/10 | | |
| Beerdoggie | 01/02/10 | such a beautiful day out! trail is in great shape | |
| UphillRider55 | 12/31/09 | Great ride with Steve (T Bone) his first time on the new San Juan section. Weather was perfect and have a ton of photos from the helmet cam. Saw BikeSurfSki on our way to Cocktail rock, great meeting you. | |
| T Bone | 12/31/09 | Super fun ride with Uphillrider55. Gorgeous day with perfect temperatures and clear blue skies. I enjoyed the good pace and frequent stops. (Thanks Craig.) Enjoyed meeting Bikesurfski. No spills but got super scratched on the branches. Really a spectacular ride! | |
| singlespeedrider | 12/27/09 | First time on San Juan added the extra climb on Main Divide up to Trabuco. Such a fun ride and I will do this one again. I need a little more practice on the switchbacks but was getting better as i got toward the bottom. | |
| ZULU | 12/24/09 | nice cool morning, great ride today | |
| TrailMonkey | 12/20/09 | Fun ride with Ted saw Thinkfast, rushak,OTB-again, Hermit,Royster71,Hippydude,Eric and I’m missing some names sorry at the top of Trabuco. Nice to put faces with the GEO names. This ride netted me 91 point, the San Juan Up-Down and add in Bluejay to the top of Trabuco then turn around and head back to Bluejay to finish off the down part of the San Juan (29.1 miles 4565 ft ascent) = 91 points, The San Juan (up and down) nets 99 points for 22.8 miles and 3690 ft ascent. so I posted that, sue me! | |
| Beerdoggie | 12/19/09 | Perfect Weather today!! packed as usual for a Saturday... My GPS was tweeking missed a lot of the ride time etc..... ride was roughly 4hr and 20 minuets great day to be on the Mountain... there was a guy on a cross road bike destroying the mountain!!! | |
| trobe1 | 12/09/09 | Met up with Thinkfast & OTB_Again near the bottom of Pinos. They were in the middle of an epic ride. Went up to Blue Jay w/them and wished them well. On the way up to Cocktail saw Hans Rey, Brian Lopes & friends coming down. Then met some guys at Cocktail that reminded me of a Cheech & Chong movie. The rails on my seat broke about half way up SJ. Got it back on pretty solid w/ some electrical tape that Eric had and was able to continue - Thanks! | |
| bikesurfski | 12/08/09 | Trail nice and tacky, a little rutted in places, but not much. I rearranged a couple of fallen boulders--no major obstacles. Stashed my backpack and extra cover half way up, got a drink at Blue Jay, and then enjoyed the warmth of the extra cover on the descent. No one on the way up, about 7 on the way down, one with a German Shepherd--lucky dog. | |
| bikesurfski | 11/29/09 | Wow--the perfect day for biking--on the perfect trail. Lots of others thinking the same, parking lot full--good to see familiar faces, and meet some new ones. Short sleeve weather all the way tho got a late start. As I was going up, a guy bombing down did a perfect wheelie on his front wheel as he pulled out of a near endo trying to stop from hitting me. I was already on the side of the hill ready to grab him if he went over the side, but no harm. Think he dislocated his heart into his throat:) | |
| UphillRider55 | 11/29/09 | Good ride on the San Juan trail except for a tumble off the cliff; got lucky and only hit my thigh hard and will have a nice bruise in a few days. Saw Royster71 and his group of riders heading down from Cocktail rock. Also saw OTB again, Thinkfast, Hippydude, and Hermit in the lot at the end of my ride, they just finished the truly technical San Juan Los Pinos Loop. I will have to try that some time. The wind not to bad, the trail still needs more rain almost completely dry today. | |
| Ladera Dave | 11/15/09 | Great ride with my friend from Tahoe. It remone him of home. | |
| bikesurfski | 11/08/09 | Primo ride. Lots of riders out--at Cocktail I redirected a guy coming down from Old San Juan to take the path down San Juan to the right that his friends took instead of going back up San Juan on the left--could have been a long afternoon for him. Pretty full parking lot. | |
| nstilwell | 11/05/09 | 2hrs 25min to Blue Jay
1hr 34min back to base of San Juan
| Hippydude | 11/01/09 | Really fun ride with a big group...Time includes doing Old San Juan and Viejo tie, for xtra fun... | |
| agitate1890 | 11/01/09 | fun group ride,laughs a plenty,good meeting ryan and terry.sj always fun... | |
| goldrunner | 11/01/09 | Nice ride today, had two uphill OTB's : (( Got impaled by my bars once & it knocked the wind out of me. Thanks for the help Mark. | |
| milatime | 11/01/09 | Great day for a ride! Good group of guys on San Juan. Gettin back on the bike again... its been to long, so much fun! | |
| bikesurfski | 10/27/09 | Best trail conditions on San Juan since winter--recent rain followed by winds and cool temps today make for perfect conditions. A nice cloud cover, a few gusts up at Blue Jay and temps from 60 early to 70 by early afternoon. Talked with 4 riders when I got back to Cocktail. Weird to stand still and see the clouds moving out toward the ocean. Rode my 2005 Trek EX8 while new one in the shop--was surprisingly good and responsive. | |
| Fast Turtle | 10/24/09 | Very sore after the ride. Continued to the top of harding trail. | |
| Fast Turtle | 10/24/09 | | |
| trobe1 | 10/14/09 | Like skiing after a fresh dump of snow. Good solo ride today. Had to put on the rain jacket about 2 miles before hitting cocktail. Just a steady drizzle for a while. Very wet from the bushes above cocktail. Followed another rider up to cocktail. Turns out he came in 2nd at Hurkey for solo 8 hour. (adam galland. Saw 2 more riders coming up to cocktail as i was descending. Of course it was uphillrider and his buddy TBone. Good seeing you guys! Coming down from cocktail was a treat after the rain. | |
| zunGu | 10/13/09 | Perfect trail conditions, hardpack and tacky, very fast. No mud or puddles, ...only two riders. | |
| genusmtbkr5 | 10/02/09 | Didn't feel too good from the start, but got my second wind once I got to Cocktail Rocks. Decided to continue to Blue Jay. Saw only 7 other riders. | |
| Hammertime | 09/30/09 | great ride with goldrunner sjon and dad, just one flat and a little blood from everyone! | |
| Jr Munoz | 09/29/09 | excellent ride today with my pal sircrashalot(goldrunner) but he was on his game today and so no entertainment ):
but the spandex and leotard boys horned in on our ride and they gave us some laughs with Sjon going down after just one switchback and hammertime looked like he was on a motorcycle (sick).
good to run into Mr Trobe and Mr Hippiedude. man Im tired ! time out (~:
| Sjon | 09/29/09 | This place is truly magical! No mishaps up or down, the biggest prob was trying to keep my ear buds from strangling me. Awesome ride in itself however the entertainment aspect was only a 1* out of 5. Nice seeing Trobe and meeting Hippydude. | |
| goldrunner | 09/29/09 | Great ride with fellow IE crew, even though I let them down on there much anticipated crashertainment : p Legs felt like KRAAP, but still a lot of fun. Ran into the Geo-Patrol on the descent. Better be honest on your posts big brother Geo is watching : )) Good to see Tom & Brian too... | |
| quad damage | 09/28/09 | Garmin turned off at Blue Jay somehow and I lost my time. =( Finally broke 1 hour to Cocktail. 59:45. Ha. Two flats on this ride made it less fun than it should have been for me. Tubeless time. | |
| zunGu | 09/28/09 | only saw 2 riders, took a break at bluejay | |
| Mtb9 | 09/27/09 | | |
| Twitch | 09/26/09 | Road with Rushak and Quad Damage most of the ride. Even ran into Rushak on a switchback when his seat about fell off. I think Quad Damage will be going tubeless after 3 flats today. Good to see dubjay out on the trail. | |
| dubjay | 09/26/09 | Was pretty toasty already at 7:30AM. So dry that sweat would evaporate almost immediately. | |
| rushak | 09/26/09 | Rode with Ryan and found Jim in the parking lot. Trail was fairly busy and it got warm pretty quick. My saddle rattled loose on the way down. Good thing I stopped to check it out. | |
| TomG | 09/25/09 | TOO HOT!! Today | |
| bikesurfski | 09/22/09 | Started out at 55 degrees, some Santa Ana winds cool early, then hot on the return--finished at 95 degrees in the canyon, but the descent was comfortable on a super fun trail. Talked with a couple who were running the Old San Juan trail, making good time. | |
| 2slow | 09/13/09 | What a great ride... | |
| Hippydude | 09/07/09 | Great labor day group ride.. Did old San Juan, but some of us continued on to Blue Jay. Also added Viejo Tie, for some xtra fun.. | |
| ThinkFast | 09/07/09 | Fun times with a great group of guys. Nice to finally have a little bit cooler weather to ride in. Too bad no Winger or Fossil sighting today. | |
| Twitch | 09/07/09 | Thanks guys fun ride. I am glad the water was on at Bluejay, I needed it after eating all your dust. Man my bike needs a lot of work... | |
| daveo | 09/03/09 | great ride. stopped at blue jay for lunch before a spectacular ride down. HOT! | |
| trobe1 | 08/12/09 | Marine layer was out when I left for ride but by the time I got to the parking lot it was sunny. Ride turned out to be a lot warmer then I thought it would be. Only saw 1 other rider named Travis. Stopped to talk to him on my way down. Said he was heading up to Pinos. Don't think I would do that one by myself. Always enjoy riding SJ, especially the downhill back from Cocktail Rocks! | |
| bikesurfski | 08/11/09 | Great to be back at my office again (San Juan Trail). It's weathered the summer pretty well (vs. Chutes) except for a spot around the tenth switchback where the trail has eroded so that when coming down and turning left around the corner, you have to hug the hill. In the upper 80's today--not up to my usual speed. A great trail to bomb down :) | |
| zunGu | 07/31/09 | nice evening ride, saw a few downhillers | |
| trobe1 | 07/29/09 | Solo ride on San Juan today. There was a cool breeze every now & then which felt great. On the way down had a western Rattlesnake start rattling on the hillside next to me as I went by. Stopped to find him and he was right above the trail and pissed off. He was really humming. I think those things are so cool. Met a rider named Scott in the parking lot, I think he is a neighbor of Unikid. Only saw 3 other riders the entire ride and that was on my way down while they were climbing up to Cocktail. | |
| Ladera Dave | 07/25/09 | not that hot today, ran into a couple of STR Peps. Great day for a long ride before Mammoth. | |
| Flip | 07/18/09 | Nice haul up to Blue jay. Heating started piling at cocktail on the way back. | |
| goldrunner | 07/11/09 | Who says there is no money to be made Mtn. biking? Made $20 bucks taking some shuttlers back to there car where they left their keys : ) 1st SJ ride on the 29er, felt as good as I could with a lot of saddle time this week. Next week its RR for me ;} | |
| trobe1 | 07/09/09 | Good solo ride on San Juan - legs felt somewhat tired on this one. Only saw 3 other riders who were all on their way down before I got to Cocktail Rock. Nice & peaceful out there. Took a nice break at both Cocktail Rock and up at Blue Jay. No crashes today. | |
| ThinkFast | 06/20/09 | Started with the group doing San Juan - Chiquito. Continued with them on New San Juan and Viejo Tie then I peeled off and headed up to Blue Jay. | |
| Rowsby | 06/16/09 | Rode with Sharon, Rob and Beni | |
| trobe1 | 06/15/09 | Another great day to be on San Juan. Saw 1 rider coming down on the bottom switchbacks and 3 riders up at Cocktail Rock who started at Blue Jay and were doing the lollipop loop. They were from Temecula and were wearing Factor Racing gear. Saw a horny toad lizard and got a flat on the way down. Good views today, could see Catalina. Didn't see any other riders the whole way down. | |
| ThinkFast | 05/31/09 | Fun times with Brian and Mark. Wet below cocktail, nice and cool most of the way up. We didn't get above the clouds until we got to Blue Jay. We added New San Juan and Viejo Tie on the way up. Traction was great on the way down. Surprised there weren't too many people out today. | |
