A counter-clockwise loop that begins and ends in Sullivan Canyon. Expect a great variety of riding as the singletrack climb out of Sullivan leads you to the smooth-flowing Farmer's singletrack descent which serves as a warm-up for J-Drop and Squirrel Cage technical descents off the Backbone trail. Warning: J-Drop and Squirrel Cage are very steep and technical descents that contain switchbacks, very deep ruts and an extreme abundance of large loose rocks. Please exercise CAUTION when riding down these trails.

milatime02/14/10Sweet. Some pretty good sized rain ruts out there.
Gun Show12/29/09PV wed night ride
El Salt12/14/09Dulyea - My group cleans it all the time!
dulyea12/05/09People who say they are cleaning J-drop are probably lying.
Gun Show11/22/09Actually, Westridge, Farmers, Upper and Lower Hectic, up Caballero, up Farmers, down Sully ridge, connecter to sullivan, up sully canyon to Bayliss where I started.
milatime11/15/09SS. Took out some buddies for their first ride in the area Lots of riders out today! J-Drop is in good shape.
milatime11/07/09Wow they plowed the entire Sullivan trail. It is now a super highway. Bummer. The rest of the trails are in great condition.
Gun Show08/16/096.9 mph 18.1 miles
Gun Show08/08/09Worried I wouldnt find J drop and would end up at Will Rogers....and out of water. Hot day! Timing worked out perfect
xhuskr08/06/09Ride 1 of 5 on mtn bike/camping trip with Shrek. Great trails overall..J-drop was a bit much for me, but the rest was great!!
shrek08/06/09Fun ride but hard to ride down J-Drop. Loved Farmers and Backbone Trails.
milatime08/04/09Another great ride on the ridgid ss. Got a little hot towards the end.
milatime07/20/09It was HOT! The new SS is fantastic. Ridding buddy had a hard time, stung by bees, ran out of water and his crank arm fell off!
Gerry Lattimer07/09/09The new bike helped me beat my previous best by 4 minutes. Squirrel cage is in great shape, but the Backbone is a little overgrown in some places.I can't believe it has taken me 3 years to get back to this ride. 37 min to top of Sullivan
AllMountainRider05/16/09That final downhill is definitely challenging!
AllMountainRider05/16/09
milatime03/01/09Ride #2 of the day but the first was just a road ride. Forgot how easy those things are to pedal. J drop is pretty rutted now. Great riding
milatime02/01/09Good pre-superbowl ride. Lots o hikers out there today.
milatime01/11/09Legs felt tired today. Absolutely beautiful today. The winds blew all the smog out to sea. Sweet!
Maverick01/10/09Rode from Brentwood with Phil.
milatime12/14/08Trails are super fast! A little bit of frost on the ground...burrrr!
Maverick12/07/08Fair amount of traffic today but perfect weather. Went up sullivan canyon (34 mins on the big bike) to farmers, the hub and then j-drop. Missed cleaning j-drop by one foot dab and then rode to the top of sullivan to take the canyon down. Wish there weren't so much fire road between sullivan canyon and j-drop but still a great ride.
Maverick12/07/08Sullivan Canyon J-Drop are 8's and 9's but there's a lot of fire road in the mix. Consistent with below, skip squirrel cage and go back up Sullivan Ridge to finish via the Canyon.
Montana11/20/08Great run, added in an extra mile after making a wrong turn coming out of the canyon after J-Drop.
Bushman11/09/08Sully was quite busy today. 38 min up Sully. Watched a Fire/Rescue heli operation for a while at the Hub. Rode most of J-drop. Cleaned Squirrel Cage.
milatime11/08/08nice little group ride. Started at 8am but it still got hot quick!
Bushman10/18/0836:50 to top of Sully.
milatime09/14/08Yahoo! Fun ride and not to hot.
TrueDis08/31/08Great ride! Started at 8am to beat the heat but probably should have started earlier.
TrueDis08/31/08J-Drop is nuts! I probably walked 1/3. My body endo'd and ate a mouthful of dirt.
chanca08/27/08Hot - started at 3pm
milatime08/02/08First time on this route. Awesome! J-Drop is pretty sick.
milatime08/02/08First time on this route. Awesome ride. J-Drop is sick!
Ladera Dave03/22/08Great ride with Shin & Marline
Bushman11/10/07Went OTB on J-Drop. Very hesitant after that. 39 min to top of Sully.
girdweed10/14/07Had just rained friday night so trail was nice and tacky, except on J-Drop in the shady areas, were it was a little sketchy but overall it was a good day!
girdweed10/14/07
trekstorm09/02/07Morning ride with Tim. A much later start than we wanted. Both had flats to contend with. By the time we got out it was already 85. Just a slow pace today with the rides the past couple of days. Got hot real quick as we stopped to gain our senses(yeah right!) Thank God for the trees.
trekstorm09/01/07Crack of dawn start. Was still quite warm. Rode about 23 miles as we felt really strong.
trekstorm08/18/07Early morning ride with Tim. Did some extra single track he knew about. Rode about 24 miles. Even at 8 it was getting hot. Hurry up Fall.
chanca07/31/07By myself. Foggy morning. Pretty cool.
trekstorm07/29/076 AM start. Rode with Tim. Great time with cool temps.
KeepsWhatHappens07/20/07Awesome route overall. Pretty hot out there even in the late afternoon. Backbone was my favorite part. J-Drop is wicked technical and I had to walk a few spots. Next time instead of Squirrel I think I'll head up Sullivan Ridge and drop Sullivan Canyon for more singletrack.
KeepsWhatHappens07/20/07Be careful on J-drop. I agree with rpham21 -- skip Squirrel and head back up Sullivan Ridge and drop Sullivan Canyon for more 4.5 more miles of singletrack.
That's How I Roll06/30/07Was just going to do Sullivan canyon only for my 3rd route but ran into some riders that were going to do this route
Bushman06/18/07Ride w/ Don. Good times.
rpham2106/02/07J Drop is in great shape. Added the Sully Cyn descent instead of Squirrel ST (be prepared for lots more climbing if you take this route) but very worth it.
chanca05/22/07First time on J-Drop and Squirrel Cage. J-Drop was insane, walked most of it. I'm a Cross-country rider.
Bushman05/19/07New dig camera. Lots of pix, so slow total time. 36 to top of Sully.
Bushman05/12/0740 to top of Sully. Rode most of J-Drop, most of Squirrel Cage (except one or two cutbacks). I like the idea of riding the rest of Sully ridge/down Sully instead of Squirrel Cage at the end (next time).
Gerry Lattimer04/12/07Got a new job so I took a last ride on one of my favorites. Followed rpham21's suggestion and added the Sullivan Canyon descent. A bit more climbing but more fun than Squirrel Cage. 37 min to top of Sully.
Krazy Nutmeg04/07/07Started and finished from Wilshire Blvd and 26th Street
rpham2103/12/07Did this solo. A great grinder w/ nice payoffs in Backbone, J Drop and Squirrel. Try skipping Squirrel and coming back down on Sully.
Bushman10/16/06First time on this ride; epic, exhausting, exhilirating. Solo. Sully's and BB: Pure beauty and fun. Farmer's: some parts a bit washed out (rain?) and narrow, but do-able. J-Drop: had to walk most of it. Parts seem extremely dangerous to ride without full body armor and DH rig. Squirrel Cage: Don't take the first ST off the paved road, that's not it, take 2nd one. Rode all of it, mostly due to exhaustion after J-drop hike.
Bushman10/16/06
Gerry Lattimer08/18/06Nice easy ride in beautiful conditions. This is one of my favorite rides. Ranks up there with Porcupine Ridge42 min to top of sullivan
Zen_Turtle08/01/06Started 6.30AM, with 72F. Pretty humid, foggy and misty. Fun!
Zen_Turtle08/01/06I think J-drop is getting better every time... or maybe I am. Farmers st and Backbone are awesome singletracks. Very nice ride.
kona-monkey07/22/06I retract my walkathon comment, however, j-drop is very challenging, but was able to ride most of it this time.
pavster07/22/06Ahh.. the long awaited revenge on J-drop. Rode this with kona-monkey today, i'd say cleaned about 90% of it, Squirrel Cage was like riding on grape nuts. The backbone section before J-drop is very overgrown, but super fun. Can't wait to return!
SloNiner06/07/06When are my SS legs going to get under me?
Zen_Turtle05/22/06Nice route, never done the Farmer's singletrack before. J-drop is really technical but I don't think is rideable on a XC rig (at least without taking significant risks)
SloNiner05/17/06First time ride in area. Sweet single track.
Gerry Lattimer05/06/06Finally was able to complete the ride without getting lost or having a mechanical. Camelback bladder sprung a leak in the the middle of the J-drop descent though.
Gerry Lattimer05/03/06Was attempting to lower my best time by not getting lost this ride. Sullivan Canyon was in great shape and the backbone was insane. It has to be one of the funnest trails around. Alas my personal record will have to wait as I flatted and ended up jogging and riding on the rim the last 4 miles. Ended up back on Bayliss about 45 minutes after dark.
a3brown04/17/06Very fun ride! The Backbone segment was absolutely sublime. J-Drop was nuts, very steep, very wet and muddy. Mere mortals should just walk it or call 911 before you start. In places the trail was just one giant 3 foot deep rut. Really cool to see such a gnarly trail.
Gerry Lattimer04/14/06Added som extra time and climbing when I missed the turn on Farmers and went down into the canyon. Whoops. Took a side trip to the Nike site also. This was an amazing ride with terrific views.
Kallisti03/27/06J -drop is nuts. Couldn't do it on my SS (walked most pf it). I can see the line, but it looks like a "big bike" line. Start was from Trippet.
kona-monkey03/16/06J-drop = walkathon.
K0KE01/10/06My IMBA mountain biking map of the Santa Monica's has this as a legal route.
K0KE12/07/05I did not see any signage on J-Drop or Squirrel Cage. That area of the SaMo's has signs everywhere, so if this was an illegal route I'd be surprised. The bottom third of J-Drop (area around gallery image 17) has some recent trail work done (although it's not in the spots that needed it).
Cycling Escapes12/07/05Started from Reseda Blvd side
tep11/29/05Gentlemen, J-drop is an illegal route. It is a hiking only trail and should probably be removed from this board. If you care to ride it, please do not make it public. Though I agree it is one of the best trails in the local SM's, I don't want to see it taken away. The less known, or the less traffic the better. thanks, tep
Terry Best11/29/05Tep, I examined the trail thoroughly BOTH times I've been down it and saw absolutely zero signs let alone signs that restrict it to 'hiking only'. I'll do further research, thanks for the warning though.
Beau Zoe11/28/05A great loop that took me several years to actually figure out. I'm sure it's been done many times before by others, but I'm kind of slow ;-) Thanks to Terry Best for the great ride.
Terry Best11/27/05Amazing ride today with Beau Zoe...excellent weather! Got ejected off the bike and landed in the stream while heading up Sullivan-sweet! Cleared J-Drop again. Too fun.
